Should the Republican Party abandon its official opposition to gay marriage? Yahoo News asked conservative and GOP voters to share where they'd like their party to stand on the issue.
COMMENTARY | As a card-carrying Republican my entire voting life, and living in one of the most conservative, right-leaning states in the country in Wyoming, the gay marriage issue has come up more than once in conversations with family, co-workers, and friends.
If the Republican Party is to move forward in being the party of inclusiveness rather than being viewed as a bunch of old, white, racist, bigots, then the time is now to alter its view of gay marriage. Being gay in 2013 is not the same as it once was. It is no longer the view of most Americans as a mental illness or a perversion. People are who they are, whether my fellow brethren within the party care to admit that or not.
I am a moderate Republican. I don't drink the Kool-Aid on everything my party stands for. I have my own mind, as do many Americans. Jon Huntsman, the former governor of Utah, has softened his stance-formerly that of supporting civil unions, but opposed to gay marriage, now believes gay couples should have the same matrimonial rights as straight couples. If the GOP has eyes for the White House in '16, moderation and party policy change begins today.
