Magnitude-6.8 quake shakes northern Chile, swaying buildings

SANTIAGO, Chile - A magnitude-6.8 earthquake shook offices, toppled supermarket shelves and broke windows Wednesday in north-central Chile, where people fled some buildings in panic.

A 50-year-old woman in the city of Copiapo died of a heart attack, said Atacama Regional Gov. Rafael Prohens, who attributed her death to fear during the quake. Authorities said that damage was limited and discounted the possibility of a tsunami.

The U.S. Geological Survey originally reported the quake at 6.7, but later revised it upward. It struck at 4:15 p.m. and was centred 44 kilometres north of Vallenar, Chile.

The quake shook the capital of Santiago, causing office buildings to sway, but was felt most powerfully in the north where state television showed images of scattered groceries at supermarket floors and broken windows at several homes in Vallenar, Copiapo and other nearby cities.

Witnesses described people running from buildings into the streets in panic.

Vallenar Mayor Cristian Tapia said telephone lines were jammed and some electricity lines were temporarily down but services were slowly returning.

"The first half hour was really tough. We're still having problems with telecommunications," Tapia told state television. "Two walls collapsed. We're evaluating ruptures at homes to find out if they're still safe to live in."

But Chile's Emergency Office, ONEMI, said no injuries were immediately reported and damage to infrastructure appears minimal. The oceanographic service discounted the possibility of a tsunami.

"There's no doubt the population in some places fled, following a culture of evacuation," Miguel Ortiz, national chief of the early alert centre at ONEMI. Two lower intensity aftershocks were also reported.

A devastating 8.8-magnitude quake and the tsunami it unleashed in 2010, killed 551 people, destroyed 220,000 homes and washed away docks, riverfronts and seaside resorts. The disaster cost Chile $30 billion, or 18 per cent of its annual gross domestic product.

Chile is one of the most earthquake-prone countries in the world.

Just off Chile's long coast, the Nazca tectonic plate plunges beneath the continent, pushing the Andes to ever-higher altitudes. The 2010 quake was so strong it changed time, shortening the Earth's day slightly by changing the planet's rotation.

The strongest earthquake ever recorded also happened in Chile, a magnitude-9.5 in 1960 that killed more than 5,000 people.

Bigfoot Blamed for Strange Shrieks

Do new recordings from Oregon's Blue Mountains offer good evidence of the mysterious bipedal creature known as Bigfoot? That's what some are claiming after hearing a recording of strange roars and shrieks given to The Oregonian newspaper.

When people think of Bigfoot evidence, casts of big footprints and blurry photos and films often come to mind. But someof the more interesting bits of evidence are sound recordings of alleged vocalizations. One company, Sierra Sounds, markets a CD called "The Bigfoot Recordings: The Edge of Discovery." Narrated by "Star Trek" actor Jonathan Frakes, the recording claims to have captured vocalizations among a Bigfoot family. The sounds include a series of guttural grunts, howls and growls. The liner notes offer testimonials from a "linguist" whose self-described credentials include playing the flute, speaking several languages, and having "a Russian friend [who] thinks I'm Russian."

She confidently asserts that the tapes are not faked, and that the vocal range is too broad to be made by a human. She also suggests that Bigfoot individuals have a language, possibly including "Sasquatch swear words."

In his 1992 book "Big Footprints: A Scientific Inquiry Into the Reality of Sasquatch" (Johnson Books, 1992), physical anthropologist Grover Krantz discussed his experience with Bigfoot recordings: "One ... tape was analyzed by some university sound specialists who determined that a human voice could not have made them; they required a much longer vocal tract. A Sasquatch investigator later asked one of these experts if a human could imitate the sound characteristics by simply cupping his hands around his mouth. The answer was yes." As for other such recordings, Krantz "listened to at least ten such tapes and find[s] no compelling reason to believe that any of them are what the recorders claimed them to be."

It's little wonder that one of the top scientific Bigfoot investigators held audio recordings in low regard: Sounds are simply poor evidence. [Infographic: Tracking Belief in Bigfoot]

Other explanations for the Blue Mountain sounds include foxes and coyotes, which ? unlike Bigfoot ? are known to exist in the area. Just because an animal call seems unusual or mysterious doesn't mean that it is. There are many factors than can affect how something sounds from far away, including temperature, wind and geographical features such as canyons.

Some suggest perhaps a hoaxer in the area is having a bit of fun with the local legend. And sometimes Bigfoot hunters go deep into the woods and "sound blast" pre-recorded "Bigfoot calls," hoping to elicit responses from any real Bigfoot nearby. Of course other people in the area can also hear the strange shrieks and howls coming from the dark wilderness and ? not knowing that Bigfoot noisemakers are afoot ? may report the sounds as genuine and unknown.

Acoustics and Bigfoot

According to "Good Morning America's John Muller, this latest recording is not the only one; in fact the mysterious sounds have been coming out of the area since at least November. This raises an obvious question: If anyone seriously believes these sounds could be real evidence for Bigfoot, why haven't investigators been able to photograph or videotape the source of the sounds? For example the cast of the optimistically titled Animal Planet show "Finding Bigfoot" has spent months in that area, and so far have come up empty-handed. Surely a well-financed cable television show would be able to provide its team members with the equipment they need; Neal Karlinsky of ABC News noted that the "Finding Bigfoot" crew has "every bit of cutting edge technology ? night vision gear and all the sensors they can get their hands on." So what's the problem?

This isn't rocket science; it's the science of acoustics. With an array of sensitive microphones placed strategically throughout an area, it's relatively simple to triangulate the location of a sound to within a few feet almost instantly. If that same area is also covered by an array of wide-angle, high-resolution cameras (using infrared at night), it should be fairly simple to trigger cameras nearest the source of the sound to photograph whatever created it: fox, hoaxer, Bigfoot or something else. Researchers could even use camera-mounted drones to help locate the vocalizations and monitor the area. Another option would be to set up a perimeter around areas where Bigfoot are said to be especially active and use sound-activated cameras. [Rumor or Reality: The Creatures of Cryptozoology]

Surely a group of 8-to-10-foot tall hairy bipedal animals can't be that hard to find if you place cameras around a hotspot of activity and wait a few weeks. Of course covering huge swaths of wilderness would not be cheap. But it would be a small price to pay if it finally provides hard evidence of Bigfoot ? instead of more ambiguous roars, grunts and howls in the wilderness.

Menendez denies he was with Dominican prostitutes

(AP Photo/J. Scott Applewhite, File)

(AP) ? Sen. Robert Menendez's office said Wednesday that he traveled three times on a plane owned by a prominent Florida political donor but that the trips were paid for and reported appropriately. At the same time, Menendez's office said unsubstantiated allegations the senator engaged in sex with prostitutes in the Dominican Republic are false.

The FBI searched the West Palm Beach, Fla., office of the donor ? eye doctor Salomon Melgen ? on Tuesday night and early Wednesday, but it was unclear if the raid was related to Menendez, a New Jersey Democrat.

Records filed in Palm Beach County show an Internal Revenue Service lien against Melgen of more than $11.1 million for unpaid taxes from 2006 through 2009. Prior liens for taxes from 1998 to 2002 were subsequently withdrawn, records show.

The Daily Caller, a conservative website, reported shortly before the November election that Menendez traveled on Melgen's private plane to the Dominican Republic to engage in sex with prostitutes.

Menendez's office said that any accusations of engaging with prostitutes "are manufactured by a politically motivated right-wing blog and are false."

At FBI headquarters in Washington, spokesman Jason Pack said the bureau "cannot comment on the existence or status of an investigation." Justice Department spokeswoman Tracy Schmaler also declined to comment.

On Tuesday, Menendez became chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, succeeding Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass.

Menendez's office said Melgen has been a friend and political supporter of the senator for many years and that the three trips that Menendez took have been "paid for and reported appropriately."

Menendez's office did not say whether the three trips were to the Dominican Republic or elsewhere. The statement did not say whether the trips were paid by Menendez personally or by his senatorial or his campaign accounts, nor did it specify how they were reported.

If Menendez did not pay for the trips, he would have to report them on annual financial disclosure forms as gifts. If he paid for the trips from his Senate office account, he would have to report them on Senate office forms. And if he used campaign funds, he would have had to report the expense on Federal Election Commission forms.

The Associated Press searched six years of office and travel-related expenses for Menendez's U.S. Senate office and found no reports reflecting payments to Melgen or trips aboard Melgen's plane. The AP also found no apparent reimbursement to Melgen in more than six years' worth of campaign expenses on file with the Federal Election Commission.

Melgen is involved in numerous businesses, all sharing the same address in West Palm Beach, according to records filed with the Department of State in Florida.

Late Tuesday and early Wednesday, FBI agents were seen inside the West Palm Beach building, walking its halls and standing beside shelves full of files.

The Daily Caller began publishing stories on its website about Menendez and Melgen on Nov. 1, when it reported that two women from the Dominican Republic said Menendez paid them for sex earlier in 2012. Prostitution is legal in the Caribbean nation.

Melgen is listed as having an ownership interest in DRM Med Assist, which Federal Aviation Administration records show is the owner of a CL-600 Challenger plane. Flight records for the aircraft were not immediately available.

Melgen, a registered Democrat, has made $193,350 in political contributions since 1998, including $14,200 to Menendez, according to Federal Election Commission records. Menendez was chairman of the Senate Democratic Campaign Committee, which raises money for Democratic Senate candidates, from 2009-2011.

Menendez, a lawyer, is a former mayor of Union City, N.J., and also served in the New Jersey state General Assembly and the New Jersey state Senate. He is divorced and has two children.

Melgen, 58, is a native of the Dominican Republic, where he earned his medical degree from the Universidad Nacional Pedro Henr?quez Ure?a in 1978. He has lived in the U.S. since at least 1980, holding an internship, residency and fellowship at hospitals in Connecticut, Missouri and Massachusetts, according to records filed with the Florida Department of Health.

Melgen has been licensed to practice in Florida since 1986 and purchased the West Palm Beach plot of land where he built his main office in 1991. Over the years, Melgen has become regarded as a top ophthalmologist, speaking at conferences and even operating on then-Gov. Lawton Chiles in 1997. The governor later appointed Melgen to a state panel on HMOs.

Calls to Melgen's offices Wednesday were forwarded to an answering service where receptionists told callers to try back Thursday. Calls to Melgen's home in North Palm Beach, which is appraised at $2.1 million, went unanswered.

On the website for his medical practice, Melgen writes: "I am always asked what sets me apart from most other doctors, and I would have to say that I do not consider myself to be a 'cookbook' physician. My patients are my number one priority, and when I am looking to treat a diagnosis I try to look at all the data at hand and extrapolate the best treatment instead of solely adhering to what the current 'standard' of treatment may be."

Emotional Abuse and Your Faith: Crazy Love and Domestic violence

Leslie Morgan Steiner has a video about, ?Crazy Love?.? I enjoyed it because she approached the subject of domestic violence in a some what different manner than most.? Keep in mind the video is only 15 minutes long, and she can?t touch on everything.? You can see by the comments on the TED website that some found her short approach refreshing, and others felt she left to much out.

?

I wanted to take parts of what she said, and maybe glance at why some just don?t see (victims and non victims) the ?crazy love? as she put for what it is.? Victims no matter whom they are ? male, female, child ? should be able to identify with parts or all of it.

I was 22. I had just graduated from Harvard College. I had moved to New York City for my first job as a writer and editor at Seventeen magazine. I had my first apartment, my first little green American Express card, and I had a very big secret. My secret was that I had this gun loaded with hollow-point bullets pointed at my head by the man who I thought was my soulmate, many, many times. The man who I loved more than anybody on Earth held a gun to my head and threatened to kill me more times than I can even remember. I'm here to tell you the story of crazy love, a psychological trap disguised as love, one that millions of women and even a few men fall into every year. It may even be your story.

Let?s stop to think about the words, ?crazy love? just for a moment.? I realize that isn?t a biblical term, but it is a good definition of the type of love you see in relationships with domestic violence.? You have abusers that tell their victims they are the worse type of person, and that is why they abuse.? Then you have the victim that feels the need to fix, and views the abuser as a soul mate type of individual.?

?

Keep in mind I don?t wish to place those descriptions into a box, and that I?m generalizing here!? Abusers have all kinds of reasons as to WHY they do what they do.? Victims may not feel the ?soul mate? part, but do feel love for them.

?

The problem I see is most don?t recognize the word ?crazy? in front of the word love, and the reason it was placed there.? Its not just the victims or abusers that don?t clue into the concept, but also general society as well.? All we have to do is look at how to many in society ? within the church or out ? respond to domestic violence.

?

Let glance at how this ?crazy love? begins:

One of the smartest things Conor did, from the very beginning, was to create the illusion that I was the dominant partner in the relationship. He did this especially at the beginning by idolizing me. We started dating, and he loved everything about me, that I was smart, that I'd gone to Harvard, that I was passionate about helping teenage girls, and my job. He wanted to know everything about my family and my childhood and my hopes and dreams. Conor believed in me, as a writer and a woman, in a way that no one else ever had. And he also created a magical atmosphere of trust between us by confessing his secret, which was that, as a very young boy starting at age four, he had been savagely and repeatedly physically abused by his stepfather, and the abuse had gotten so bad that he had had to drop out of school in eighth grade, even though he was very smart, and he'd spent almost 20 years rebuilding his life. Which is why that Ivy League degree and the Wall Street job and his bright shiny future meant so much to him. If you had told me that this smart, funny, sensitive man who adored me would one day dictate whether or not I wore makeup, how short my skirts were, where I lived, what jobs I took, who my friends were and where I spent Christmas, I would have laughed at you, because there was not a hint of violence or control or anger in Conor at the beginning. I didn't know that the first stage in any domestic violence relationship is to seduce and charm the victim.

What abusers tend to do is make this person feel very special, and I never thought about the part of creating them to be the ?dominant? partner in the relationship.? Keep in mind it isn?t the type of dominant we normally hear about.? Remember the word ?CRAZY? here!?

?

What is the crazy part?? Remember in her story he idolized all that she was and did.? Abusive personalities then concentrate on breaking down the ?dominant? traits they felt so lovely before.? I guess they feel that is what makes them dominant, and yet all that they loved about that person to begin with is gone.? They end up frustrated, and the victim completely destroyed.? No one wins, and everyone loses.

?

Its all part of the dance.? We can all look back at abusive relationships, and recognize the idolizing part afterwards.? It?s not so easy to see at the time, because the early stages of falling in love tends to be described as:?? sweep them off their feet.? In healthy relationships the ?adoring? part stays, but you aren?t so easily sweep up in the moment anymore.? You move on to the next stage of working on the whole of your relationship, and you grow to love the person more and more in different ways.? It?s different, but still awesome.? Your firm foundation is present, and now its time to build up and out from there.

?

child's toy dumper truck 7th January 2012 9:41.40am

Before I go on lets picture a group of small children, and one of the children just received a new toy that they love.? Their whole world at that point revolves around this new possession that is all theirs!?? This type of thinking is normal for a young child, and at times they can get very possessive of it.?? They don?t want to share it, and no one can touch or play with it.? They might do something to it, or break it, or change it in a way that they don?t like!? Along comes their friend to see what all the excitement is about, and they aggressively pushed away.? ?It?s MINE!? you hear screamed.? We have all seen this scene played out at one time or another.? Then you have caregiver or parent come and attempt to teach the child the what's, whys, and how's of sharing, and learning to be better friend.

?

In abusive relationships you see similar dynamics.? What may seem like early stages of being swept off you feet now turns into a reality of YOU being their possession.? Think of a young child with a favorite NEW toy in which they refuse to share with others.? The difference is you no longer have a caregiver or parent to enforce how their behavior and attitude is wrong.? After all, they are an adult at this point.?

?

In healthy relationships you can point this out, but in abusive relationships such statements are returned with violence.?? It?s similar to the dynamic of the young child being told by another child that they need to share their new toy, and they refuse to.? You don?t have someone helping them realize this is a immature trait that leads to selfishness.? You are ?theirs? and they will do what they will with you.? A young child can be taught, but abusive person will remind you they will do what they want, when they want, and how they want.? If you don?t like it?? Tough!

?

Most people will attempt to ?reason? with such a circumstance, and sadly that is when the abuse escalates to very scary levels.? Since you are no more than a possession to them they do not realize the irrational nature of their behavior.? What they do realize once they have calmed down there is the distance between them and their victim.? Their response to that distance isn?t rational either.?

?

They will then use your ?dominant? position within the relationship against you, and then manipulative the past to make them look like the ?true? victim.? They need your help since they were the abused child of the stepfather, and they FOUGHT all their life to get where they are now.? YOU are their partner, and if you love them enough you will help them evolve.? You will help them to get your level of ?dominance?.?? Yes, it?s a crazy type of dominance as well.? It?s a brand new definition that Webster?s dictionary hasn?t even considered yet.

?

They will pick one trait at a time (most of the time anyway) that they ?loved? in the past, and demand that it be altered or stopped all together.? This trait is the cause of all the tension within the relationship.? They will point out that you look ?stuck up? or ?better than everyone else? when this trait is present.? That mysteriously turns into how the world sees it the same way they do, but they were brave enough to finally point it out to you.? How you were lucky that they were gracious enough to live with it up until this point, and they had every right to finally SNAP!? YOU are just to uppity to admit it.

?

This is also the time they start to use all those secrets that were revealed in that ?magically atmosphere? of trust in the beginning of the relationship.? After all, they were not the only ones that were sharing during that time of excitement.? Those secrets between the two of you at one time were received with empathy, compassion, and love.? It now is being used against you, and to make you feel badly about yourself.

?

I will use an example in this case.? As I have written about myself in the past I wasn?t given much guidance in certain areas growing up.? Lets pretend for now it was in the area of cleaning up the house.? Now in the beginning of the relationship I might have shared that I felt inadequate because I didn?t know how to do something in regards to cleaning the house.?? How I try my hardest now ? because under the surface it makes me feel better.?

?

In response your new partner makes you feel so much better about this aspect of your past, and they will love you EVEN if it were true ? which of course they believe its not.? They see you as one of the tidiest people they know in so many areas, and they will be there to remind you about those ? and always make you feel better.? I know silly example, but lets use to get view the principal here!? The basic point is everyone has tender spots, and insecurities in some areas.?

?

In a healthy relationship you realize the lines in the sand with your spouse or partner that you do not cross.? You don?t cross them, and you realize your spouse wouldn?t either.? I?m not saying in times of tension humans aren?t tempted to, because we are all capable of this.? If we value the relationship on any level?? We realize the trust that would be destroyed on some level if we crossed that line during the uproar.? It?s basic respect of any relationship.? That?s not to say you might not say something else hurtful or stupid, but you also know where the lines are drawn.

?

The abusive person sees no line in the sand, except when it comes to them.? You are the child?s toy in our story above, and as their possession there is no need for boundaries.?? So there is nothing wrong with reminding you that since you grew up NOT knowing how to clean a house that lets just face facts here ? you a slob when it comes to 98% of things you do in life!? It?s the truth, and they shouldn?t have to hide it!? Notice they don?t just use the ?house? only, but makes sure to include that 98%.? It will be useful for them in the future.? Why?? You were defined as a slob, and they will use it in most areas of disagreement the future as well.? Your secrets are now turned into ammunition.

?

At the same time?? As we see with most con men in life they also have learned the art of manipulation.? The whole entire conversation will again turn to them, and their woes in life.? Some abusive personalities will turn on the water works (tears) at this point, but others use different tactics.? Remember con men have a way of turning their ugly actions around, and make it about the injustices towards them.?

?

That aspect isn?t all that uncommon, and YES there are different ways of doing it.? For example, when Jack Schaap was arrested and jailed within the last year for fooling around with a child.? The parties that he had wrapped around his little finger were the first to say he was one of the most Godly men they knew, and how everyone makes mistakes.?

?

We have one small grain of truth there (everyone makes mistakes), but the overall principal of the sin is completely lost on them.? No doubt it took time and effort for Jack Schaap (or certain circles of the IFB in general) to mold these people to think this way.? Abusive partners do the same thing in some ways.? They have a way of warping reality, and their campaigns of minimizing the abuse is very successful.

?

I think in some ways people in church or in general society have a hard time realizing just about anyone can get taught up in something very ugly and dangerous.? It?s easier to think of others as either totally na?ve or stupid then to realize its happened in history to many times to count.? It?s easier to think you are immune, and can?t be manipulated.? In reality its just the opposite.

?

I guess it was interesting to me Leslie?s prospective on being made the dominate person in the relationship.? In reality, she was only speaking of qualities or characteristics of her that were thought to be positive.? Gifts, if you will.? Instead of appreciating those gifts, and realizing its an asset to the relationship?? They are turned into threats of the abuser?s need for dominance and control.? Yes, indeed doing your best to destroy what you claimed you love is a crazy love for sure.? It certainly isn?t the type that Jesus would have us portray towards others.

How to start a business | Business branding for beginners

Strong ideas are the starting point of any successful business, but if you want to take it further you?ll need to learn how to brand your business. As part of our series on ?How to Start a Business?, ?Joanne Dewberry, Sage Business Expert,?and owner of Charlie Moo?s explains how you can use branding to improve your business.?

Joanne Dewberry

Branding isn?t just about having a fabulous logo ? you have to consider every aspect, including yourself.? Ensure you work with colours, styles and themes which you can easily use over the various aspects of your business to provide consistence.? Branding should encompass your whole business, including your ethos, core values and mission statement. Ultimately, when a customer sees your brand, what key things do you want to spring to mind?

The story of Moo

The name ?Charlie Moo?s? developed from my son ? Charlie. We have referred to him as ?Moo? since he was a baby. Obviously, Moo lends itself quite nicely to the cow imagery. My friend came up with the concept of the cow being the letter M and it works on so many levels:

  • As a full banner using the whole name or just using the M cow as a stand-alone logo, which does not look out of place and is still distinctly Charlie Moo?s. The style of the M cow also lent itself nicely to being transformed into both my girl cows, Megan and Olive.
  • These stand-alone cow images work well as images on cake toppers, my popular range of wrapping paper and other products. For the Royal Wedding in April 2011, I used Charlie and Megan Moo adorned with crowns on a backdrop of the Union Jack. For Easter I have them wearing bunny masks. All quirky, unique and distinct. This enabled me to keep my branding consistent but also topical, seasonal and fresh.
  • I also ensure that each bag I make has a label sewn inside it, a swing tag attached to the handle with string made from an image of one of our party bags, and I pop a business card inside too. That way, when each child that leaves a party with one of my handmade fabric bags,? they ? or, more importantly, their parents ? know where the bag came from.

Get professional help

When creating visual materials, you need to take all aspects of the design into consideration; fonts, colours, and how the logo will work alongside your existing designs or packaging.

This is an important aspect of your business so if you?re not a graphic designer then employ someone to help you. Our original logo was designed in the basic MS Paint program and was incredibly square and pixelated. We got a graphic designer on board to smooth it all out and make it more visually appealing, which instantly changed the whole appearance of my website and has since paved the way for Megan and Olive Moo. These high-quality images could then also be easily used on branded items such as wrapping paper and cake toppers.

Ask your audience

Before you spend any money on logos, business cards, leaflets, web design, etc., it is really useful to get other people?s opinions; whether it?s via people you?ve done business with before or through social media such as Twitter. Try to avoid?just?asking family members as they will have a tendency to give a positive appraisal rather than the constructive criticism you need. Developing a brand is not an easy process, but once it is right you?ve then got to reinforce it in everything you say and do. It inevitably encompasses everything about you and what your business does.

Smartphone sales rise 36 percent worldwide

Smartphone sales increase for the fourth quarter is in sharp contrast to the 6 decline in PC shipments. Smartphone sales accounted for 45 percent of mobile phone shipments, a new record.?

Samsung Electronics' Galaxy Note II is displayed at the showroom of the company's headquarters in Seoul, South Korea, Friday. Samsung was tops in smartphone sales in the fourth quarter, shipping nearly 64 million devices for a 29 percent share of the global market. Apple was No. 2 with nearly 48 million shipments.

The findings from the research firm International Data Corp. are the latest sign of the technology upheaval being wrought by the growing popularity of?smartphones?that can perform a wide variety of tasks, including surfing the Web and taking high-quality photos.

Companies whose fortunes are tied to the PC industry have been particularly hard hit by the shift to?smartphones?and tablet computers.

While some?smartphone?models were in short supply during the holiday season, fourth-quarter PC shipments fell by 6 percent from the previous year, according to another IDC report released earlier this month.

IDC estimates 219 million?smartphones?were shipped during the final three months of last year. That compares with nearly 161 million in the same 2011 period.?Smartphones accounted for about 45 percent of all mobile phone shipments in the fourth quarter, the highest percentage recorded by IDC.

Samsung Electronics Co. retained its bragging rights as the?smartphone sales leader, shipping nearly 64 million devices for a 29 percent share of the global market.

Apple Inc. ranked second with nearly 48 million iPhones shipped during the fourth quarter, translating into a market share of 22 percent.

For all of 2012, IDC estimated nearly 713 million?smartphones?were shipped worldwide, a 44 percent increase from the previous year. Meanwhile, annual PC shipments fell 3 percent from 2011, IDC said. It was the first annual decline since 2001.

Entering 2012, Apple held a slight edge over Samsung in the?smartphone?market. But Samsung sprinted past Apple in smartphone sales during the year as it introduced an array of models, most of which run on Google Inc.'s free Android software. Samsung's top-selling line, the Galaxy, boasts larger display screens than the iPhone and other features.

Apple alleges Samsung's devices illegally ripped off the iPhone's innovations. After a high-profile trial in federal court, a jury in San Jose, Calif. sided with some of the patent infringement claims last August and decided Samsung should pay more than $1 billion in damages. Samsung has been trying to overturn the verdict.

Lower-priced?smartphones?from Samsung and other device makers also have hurt Apple, whose slowing iPhone growth has contributed to a $250 billion decline in its market value since its stock price peaked in late September.

IDC says Huawei Technologies Ltd.'s emphasis on less expensive handsets helped it become the third largest?smartphone?maker with a market share of 5 percent at the end of the fourth quarter.

Editor's desk: Macworld|iWorld 2013 bound!

Early tomorrow morning I'm jumping in a plane and flying to San Francisco, California for Macworld|iWorld 2013. Since it's been well below -20 celsius in Montreal this week, I'm looking even more forward to it than usual.

Leanna Lofte, who usually covers the SF events with me, just gave birth to a beautiful baby girl, Lucy Danae Lofte, so she's sitting this one out. There are very few people in our line of work with her camera skills, so to make sure we keep the level of quality you guys expect and deserve, we're bringing Martin Reisch with us this year. Yeah.

There'll be a lot going on, and we'll be doing our best to bring you with us every step of the way with photo journals, videos, podcasts, and a bunch of social sharing. Here's the plan so far:

There will be tons of other stuff happening in and around all that, so make sure you keep your browsers locked to iMore's Macworld|iWorld page, and subscribe to the iMore YouTube channel to get all the latest videos as soon as inhumanly possible.

And for up-to-the-minute stuff, including everything and anything unfit for print, you can follow @reneritchie and @safesolvent on Twitter.

Last year Macworld|iWorld completed their transition from trade show to epicenter of the community, from a place to see Apple stuff to place to meet and enjoy the company of fellow Apple enthusiasts. I can't wait to see what they have in store for all of us this year.

Let me know what you'd like to see from our Macworld|iWorld coverage, and if you're going to be there are well, please do come up and say hello!

Tight inventory slows US pending home sales

(AP) ? A measure of Americans who signed contracts to buy homes fell last month after reaching a 2 ?-year high in November. Sales were held back by a limited supply of available homes.

The National Association of Realtors said Monday that its seasonally adjusted index for pending home sales dropped 4.3 percent in December from November to 101.7. That's still 6.9 percent higher than a year ago.

The decline signals that sales of previously occupied homes may cool off in the coming months. There's generally a one- to two-month lag between a signed contract and a completed sale.

Still, the broader trend in home sales remains solid. Completed sales of previously occupied homes rose last year to their highest level in five years, one of many signs of recovery in the housing market last year. And the Realtors' group forecasts that sales will rise 9 percent this year, as the recovery strengthens. Other economists have similar forecasts.

"We believe the disappointment represents just a brief lull in what are volatile data rather than a fundamental change of direction," said Jim O'Sullivan, an economist at High Frequency Economics.

Stable job gains and record-low mortgage rates have encouraged more people to buy homes. And a tight supply of homes for sale has pushed up prices and made builders more confident to step up construction.

Completed sales of previously occupied homes dipped in December from November, primarily because the number homes available for sale fell to an 11-year low. And stable price gains could draw more sellers in the spring, when the traditional home-buying season begins.

More people are also moving out on their own after living with friends and relatives in the recession. That's driving a big gain in apartment construction and also pushing up rents.

Builders, meanwhile, started work on the most new homes in 4 ? years in December. Last year was the best year for residential construction 2008, just after the recession started.

In December, the index of contracts signed fell in the Northeast, South and West. But it ticked up in the Midwest. The supply of homes costing less than $100,000 was particularly tight in the West, the Realtors said.

(AP Photo, File)

(AP) ? A puzzling Academy Awards season will sort itself out a bit more on Sunday with the Screen Actors Guild Awards, where top performers gather to honor their own in what often is a prelude for who'll go home with an Oscar.

Among nominees for the 19th annual guild awards are Oscar winners Daniel Day-Lewis, Sally Field and Tommy Lee Jones for the Civil War epic "Lincoln"; Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway for the Victor Hugo musical adaptation "Les Miserables"; and Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper and Oscar recipient Robert De Niro for the oddball romance "Silver Linings Playbook."

De Niro and Jones are in an exclusive supporting-actors group where all five nominees are past Oscar winners. The others are Alan Arkin for the Iran hostage-crisis thriller "Argo," Javier Bardem for the James Bond adventure "Skyfall" and Philip Seymour Hoffman for the cult drama "The Master."

Honors from the actors union, next weekend's Directors Guild of America Awards and Saturday night's Producers Guild of America Awards ? whose top honor went to "Argo" ? typically help to establish clear favorites for the Oscars.

But Oscar night on Feb. 24 looks more uncertain this time after some top directing prospects, including Ben Affleck for "Argo" and Kathryn Bigelow for "Zero Dark Thirty," missed out on nominations. Both films were nominated for best picture, but a movie rarely wins the top Oscar if its director is not also in the running.

Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln" would seem the Oscar favorite with 12 nominations. Yet "Argo" and Affleck were surprise best-drama and director winners at the Golden Globes, and then there's Saturday's Producers Guild win for "Argo," leaving the Oscar race looking like anybody's guess.

The Screen Actors Guild honors at least should help to establish solid front-runners for the stars. All four of the guild's individual acting winners often go on to receive the same prizes at the Academy Awards.

Last year, the guild went just three-for-four ? with lead actor Jean Dujardin of "The Artist" and supporting players Octavia Spencer of "The Help" and Christopher Plummer of "Beginners" also taking home Oscars. The guild's lead-actress winner, Viola Davis of "The Help," missed out on the Oscar, which went to Meryl Streep for "The Iron Lady."

The guild also presents an award for overall cast performance, its equivalent of a best-picture honor. The nominees are "Argo," ''The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel," ''Les Miserables," ''Lincoln" and "Silver Linings Playbook."

Yet the cast prize has a spotty record at predicting the eventual best-picture recipient at the Oscars. Only eight of 17 times since the guild added the category has the cast winner gone on to take the best-picture Oscar. "The Help" won the guild's cast prize last year, while Oscar voters named "The Artist" as best picture.

Such past guild cast winners as "The Birdcage," ''Gosford Park" and "Inglourious Basterds" also failed to take the top Oscar.

Airing live on TNT and TBS, the show features nine television categories, as well.

The SAG ceremony also includes awards for film and TV stunt ensemble. The film stunt nominees are "The Amazing Spider-Man," ''The Bourne Legacy," ''The Dark Knight Rises," ''Les Miserables" and "Skyfall."

Receiving the guild's life-achievement award is Dick Van Dyke, who presented the same prize last year to his "The Dick Van Dyke Show" co-star, Mary Tyler Moore. Van Dyke's award will be presented by his 1960s sitcom's creator and co-star, Carl Reiner, and Alec Baldwin.

Pets displaced by Hurricane Sandy need volunteer assistance

Posted by madelinefish9 on Saturday, December 29, 2012 ? Leave a Comment?

Months after Sandy tore through Long Island, over 200 pets belonging to displaced residents are still being taken care of by volunteers at the Nassau County Emergency Pet Shelter.

?We started off with 450 pets when the storm hit, now we have about 250,? said Beverly Poppell, vice-president and executive director of Pet Safe Coalition. ?We have about 120 cats, a bunny rabbit, 2 turtles a beta fish and the rest are dogs.?

The shelter is located in Garden City and is run mainly on volunteers of the Pet Safe Coalition. An organization that?s main goal is to help pets in disaster situations, like Hurricane Sandy. ?We want pet owners to be responsible in these types of situations,? said Poppell. ?Our motto is, ?have a pet, have a plan.??

Volunteer duties include cleaning litter boxes, feeding the pets, taking dogs for walks, cleaning cages and making sure the animals receive personal attention.

Volunteers have come from all over the country to assist in the running of the shelter. ?Our volunteers are dedicated to these animals,? said Poppell. ?We actually had a volunteer from California that was traveling cross-country on horseback and she made a detour here to help us!?
