Five members of a Southern California family were killed Saturday when their van was rear-ended by an 18-year-old driver who was later arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, authorities said.

The dead were among seven family members who were in the van, authorities said. The other two ? the 40-year-old female driver and a 15-year-old boy ? were hospitalized in critical condition.

Jean Soriano of California was booked into the Clark County Detention Center after he was treated and released at University Medical Center in Las Vegas, Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Loy Hixson said.

The crash happened at about 3 a.m. on Interstate 15 near the Utah line. Soriano's sport utility vehicle struck the van from behind, causing both vehicles to spin out of control and roll near Mesquite, some 80 miles northeast of Las Vegas, investigators said.

A 23-year-old passenger in Soriano's SUV was treated at the hospital and released.

Authorities believe Soriano was returning from a visit with family in Utah to his home in California at the time of the wreck, Hixson said. They didn't immediately release his hometown or the names or hometowns of the victims.

Beer bottles were found in the SUV, Hixson said, and troopers performed a blood-alcohol test on Soriano at the hospital. The results won't be known for a couple of weeks, he said.

Hixson said only two of the seven people in the van were wearing seatbelts. The five who were not buckled in were ejected, but one survived.

"Unfortunately, so many in the van weren't wearing seatbelts, and some might have survived had they been wearing them," Hixson said. "We see it so many times where people can survive simply by having a seatbelt on."

The van was carrying a couple, their children and some aunts and uncles, he said. Killed were three men in their 40s, a teenage female and an adult female.

Exxon has yet to excavate area of ruptured Arkansas oil pipeline

HOUSTON (Reuters) - Exxon Mobil Corp said on Sunday that crews at the scene of its crude oil pipeline spill in Arkansas had yet to excavate the area of the breach to determine the cause.

"I can't speculate on when that will happen," Exxon spokesman Alan Jeffers said. "Excavation is necessary as part of an investigation to determine the cause of the incident."

Exxon also had no estimate on how long repairs would take or when the oil pipeline would restart. Exxon shut the line, which carries heavy Canadian crude oil from Illinois to Texas, on Friday when the leak was discovered.

Italy president denies to resign, will stay to deal with crisis

By Giselda Vagnoni

ROME (Reuters) - Italian President Giorgio Napolitano on Saturday ruled out standing down to make way for new parliamentary elections after the failure of attempts to form a government this week, saying he would stay in place until the very end of his mandate in May.

Earlier, all of Italy's main newspapers said Napolitano, whose term ends on May 15, was considering stepping down to get around constitutional provisions which prevent a president dissolving parliament and calling elections in the final months of his mandate.

But the 87-year-old head of state told reporters he would continue his efforts to break the deadlock since elections last month that left no single group with enough power to govern.

"I will continue until the last day of my mandate to do as my sense of national responsibility suggests, without hiding from the country the difficulties that I am still facing," he told reporters at his Quirinale palace.

He said he would ask two small groups of experts to formulate proposals for institutional and economic reforms that could be supported by all political parties.

Napolitano met leaders of the main parties on Friday to try to find a way out of the stalemate, which has raised fears of prolonged uncertainty in the euro zone's third-largest economy.

However with all of the three main groups in parliament clinging to entrenched positions that have prevented a majority being formed in parliament, hopes of a solution that would avoid a new snap election have faded.

Center-left leader Pier Luigi Bersani, whose party controls the lower house but does not have a majority in the Senate, failed to win enough support to form a government from any of the other parties during a week of talks.

He rejected demands by center-right leader Silvio Berlusconi for a cross-party coalition deal that would give the scandal-plagued former prime minister a share in power and the right to decide Napolitano's successor.

Both Berlusconi's group and the populist 5-Star Movement led by ex-comic Beppe Grillo have also ruled out supporting a new technocrat government like the one led by outgoing Prime Minister Mario Monti, blocking what appears to be the only other option.

7 industries that prey on our weaknesses?

You're delusional.

No, it's OK, we all are.

Think about your gym, which you visit so infrequently you?re practically making a charity donation to Bally Total Fitness. Or the diet cleanse you spent $100 on ... when you could have paid $30 in healthy groceries that would have also done the trick.

Don?t kick yourself?you?re not alone in falling prey to these marketing ploys. There?s a reason that, for instance, the burgeoning ?enhanced waters? beverage category (think Vitamin Water) has become a $1.5 billion industry.

By playing on our delusions and our fears, companies tempt us to shell out for needless items, and that can wreak havoc on our finances.

Watch out for these seven industries that profit from our insecurities?and find out how to resist their ploys.

Pet products
Americans spent an estimated $53 billion on their pets in 2012, a number that's grown nearly 30 percent in the past five years, even as the economy tanked. Last Halloween, pet owners were projected to spend $370 million on their pets' Halloween costumes?a 40 percent increase from 2010.

Several factors account for the rise in pet spending: Americans have a third fewer friends than they did 20 years ago and the number of Americans living alone?one in seven?is at an all-time high. These trends partly explain why about four in five animal owners think of their pets as children, and 58 percent even call themselves the "mommy" or "daddy" of their pets.

This higher status of pets in the eyes of their owners has even resulted in one million dogs being named beneficiaries in their owners' wills.

Tip: Be realistic about how much your pet costs, and be sure to budget for any extra splurges or treats. As for whether to name your beloved pet in your will?that depends on what you think of its money-managing skills.

Gyms
No industry plays on the chasm between what we do and what we wish we did better than the $21 billion fitness club industry. At the beginning of a fitness push, we are all too happy to hand over a hefty membership fee and sign a yearlong contract, hoping the sunk cost will encourage us to create whole new selves.

But the reality is that 67 percent of people with gym memberships never use them. Even those who go to the gym regularly are paying a lot more than they imagined: A University of California, Berkeley study showed that people who signed up for a monthly gym membership ended up paying 70 percent more than they could have paid on a pay-per-visit plan available at the same club.

The reason? ?Overconfidence about future self-control,? say the researchers. In other words: Delusion.

Tip: If this is you, find out the best workouts for you and your budget. Even if you do use the gym, make sure you're getting the best deal possible: comparison shop, use a competitor's price to get a deal at your preferred gym, or sign up for a yearlong membership to get the best possible rate.

Health and diet food
In 2011, the market for vitamins and supplements was $28 billion?despite a lack of solid research proving their effectiveness. In fact, most of our food is fortified with nutrients, so once-common deficiency diseases are now rare. Most researchers say that unless you're pregnant or elderly or have an identified deficiency, you don't need supplements and that a balanced diet is the best source of nutrients.

As for the weight-loss market, which in 2010 was worth $60 billion, several studies show that dieting actually consistently correlates with future weight gain.

Tip: If you're a sucker for vitamins and supplements, don't pay a premium for packaged foods making health claims; eat these superfoods instead. And if you think your ticket to weight loss is a diet program, consider preparing meals from fresh, whole ingredients and setting up a regular exercise routine to do it on your own instead.

Electronics rebates and warranties
Electronics stores often advertise a new gadget?s price as though you already received all the mail-in rebates. But a Consumer Reports survey found that fewer than half of people always or often cash in on rebate offers, and a full quarter never do. Even among those who sent in for their rebates, 21 percent said they never received them.

Additionally, extended warranties and insurance plans for smartphones sound so sensible. But they're almost never a good deal, consumer advocates warn. The extended warranty business itself generates $15 billion a year of almost pure profit, playing on our innate urge to avoid losses even if we could financially afford to replace the object.

And consider this: By the time the manufacturer's warranty ends on your phone, laptop or other high-tech gizmo, you'll probably want to upgrade to a newer model or the replacement price will have dropped, making the extended warranty moot.

Tip: Before you rush to take advantage of a deal you can only get with rebates, ask yourself: Are you going to fill in and mail every form?

And next time the cashier asks you if you want to pay 10 to 50 percent extra for an extended warranty, just say no.

Clothes
According to a recent survey, a woman owns 22 garments she never wears.

And that adds up: Americans spend $331 billion a year on clothing (which works out to $1,100 per person a year). While every once in a while we all really do need a new item of clothing, you could probably easily identify a number of pieces in your closet that you never wear?and they probably add up to a lot of wasted dollars.

How does this happen? We tend to invest in the same items over and over (whether ten black sweaters or a dozen flirty sundresses). Another problem: We buy for the life we want to have?cocktail dresses for parties we never go to or fancy new workout clothes for the gym we never visit.

Tip: Host a clothing swap to get rid of the chaff in your closet and bring fresh inspiration in, and go on a clothing fast for six months to force yourself to get creative with what you have. Need some ideas? See how one editor dressed herself for one month with just six items of clothing.

Cleaning products
Do you buy different cleaners for your floors, your furniture, your bathroom and your windows? Then you can understand how the cleaning product industry rakes in $52 billion a year.

Commercials for household disinfectants and other cleaning products would have you believe that illness-causing germs linger on every surface. But experts warn that routine use of disinfectants is not only unnecessary but harmful, especially when harsh chemicals are used.

Tip: You can get your home sparkly-clean?and with less harm to the environment?using inexpensive combinations of baking soda and vinegar. In fact, we can show you how to tackle 40 household tasks with just these five everyday products.

Baby products
Certain baby products really do ensure infant safety, like car seats. But companies also milk extra money out of parents' desires to give their kids the most organic, least toxic, most brain-enhancing food, toys, clothing, bedding and more.

Previous generations somehow survived infancy without shopping cart liners, video baby monitors, tiny shade tents for sunny days at the park and many of other items that make up the $7 billion Americans spend on today's babies.

Tip: Stick to essentials and learn how to save on baby stuff with these 12 tips. Want to really overhaul the way you handle the baby portion of your budget? Check out our Baby on Board Bootcamp, which explains what you should buy new, what you can get used and which safety considerations really matter.

HIV Test Urged for 7K Dental Patients

The Tulsa Health Department is warning 7,000 patients of a local dentist's office that they could have contracted HIV, hepatitis B or hepatitis C from poor sterilization practices.

Dr. Wayne Harrington, an oral surgeon with a practice in Tulsa, Okla., is being investigated by the state dental board, the state bureau of narcotics and the federal Drug Enforcement Agency because one of his patients recently tested positive for hepatitis C and HIV without known risk factors other than receiving dental treatment.

Upon hearing of the infected patient, the Oklahoma Board of Dentistry conducted a surprise inspection of Harrington's practice on March 18, allegedly finding numerous problems, including regular use of a rusty set of instruments on patients with known infections, and the practice of pouring bleach on wounds until they "turned white."

Calls to Harrington's office were directed to an operator, who told ABC News the clinic no longer took voicemails. The operator said patients were being referred to another clinic, but did not disclose the clinic's name.

Susan Rogers, executive director of Oklahoma's Board of Dentistry, called the incident a "perfect storm." On top of his many violations in sanitary practice, the dentist was a Medicaid provider, which means he had a high proportion of patients with HIV or hepatitis, she said.

Harrington and his staff told investigators that he treated a "high population of known infectious disease carrier patients," according to a complaint filed by the Oklahoma Board of Dentistry.

Chilling Details Emerge on Newtown School Shooter Adam Lanza Watch Video Secrets of the Teenage Mind: What Parents Should Know Watch Video

He allegedly allowed unlicensed dental assistants to administer medication, according to the complaint. These assistants were left to decide which medications to administer, and how much was appropriate.

Drug cabinets were unlocked and unsupervised during the day, and Harrington did not keep an inventory log of drugs, some of which were controlled substances. One drug vial expired in 1993.

"During the inspections, Dr. Harrington referred to his staff regarding all sterilization and drug procedures in his office," the complaint read. "He advised, 'They take care of that. I don't.'"

Harrington allegedly re-used needles, contaminating drugs with potentially harmful bacteria and trace amounts of other drugs, according to the complaint. Although patient-specific drug records indicated that they were using morphine in 2012, no morphine had been ordered since 2009.

The instruments for infected patients was given an extra dip in bleach in addition to normal cleaning methods, but they had red-brown rust spots, indicating that they were "porous and cannot be properly sterilized," according to the complaint.

The Tulsa Health Department said Harrington's patients will receive letters by mail notifying them of the risk and steps to obtain free-of-charge testing.

While 7,000 patients may have been exposed, Joseph Perz, an epidemiologist with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said it's "extremely rare" to see dental transmission of HIV and hepatitis B or C. In July 2012, 8,000 Coloradans were notified that their dentist had reused needles, potentially exposing them to the blood-borne viruses. But not a single case was identified, according to the CDC.

Dental transmission is not impossible, however. Perz cited a dental fair three years ago in which hepatitis B was transmitted between patients.

In July 2012, more than 1,800 veterans who received dental care at a St. Louis VA Medical Center were warned that improper cleaning of dental tools may have exposed them to HIV and hepatitis.

The Tulsa Health Department has set up a hotline at (918) 595-4500 for people with questions.

ABC News' Dr. Richard Besser and Katie Moisse contributed to this story.

Researchers find novel way plants pass traits to next generation

Wednesday, March 27, 2013

New research explains how certain traits can pass down from one generation to the next ? at least in plants ? without following the accepted rules of genetics.

Scientists have shown that an enzyme in corn responsible for reading information from DNA can prompt unexpected changes in gene activity ? an example of epigenetics.

Epigenetics refers to modifications in the genome that don't directly affect DNA sequences. Though some evidence has suggested that epigenetic changes can bypass DNA's influence to carry on from one generation to the next, this is the first study to show that this epigenetic heritability can be subject to selective breeding.

Researchers bred 10 generations of corn and found that one particular gene's activity persisted from one generation to the next whether the enzyme was functioning or not ? meaning typical genetic behavior was not required for the gene's trait to come through.

And that, the scientists determined, was because the enzyme targets a tiny piece of DNA ? previously thought of as "junk DNA" ? that had jumped from one area of the genome to another, giving that little fragment power to unexpectedly turn on the gene.

The gene in question affects pigmentation in the corn plant. As a result of these experiments, the researchers were able to change yellow kernel corn to a blue kernel variety by compromising the activity of the enzyme in each male parent.

"This is the first example where somebody has been able to take an epigenetic source of variation and, through selective breeding, move it from an inactive state to an active state," said Jay Hollick, associate professor of molecular genetics at The Ohio State University and lead author of the study. "The gene changes its expression in an epigenetic fashion and it doesn't follow standard inheritance behaviors. Those two factors alone have pretty profound implications not only for breeding but also for evolution."

The study appears online in the journal The Plant Cell.

Plant breeders tend to expect to generate desired traits according to what is known as Mendelian principles of inheritance: Offspring receive one copy of genes from each parental plant, and the characteristics of the alleles, or alternative forms of genes, help predict which traits will show up in the next plant generation.

However, epigenetic variations that change the predictability of gene behavior have complicated those expectations.

"The breeding community searches for novel traits that will have commercial interest and they really don't care what the basis is as long as they can capture it and breed it. Epigenetic heritability throws a kink in the expectations, but our findings also provide an opportunity ? if they recognize the variation they're looking for is the result of epigenetics, they could use that to their advantage," said Hollick, also an investigator in Ohio State's centers for RNA Biology and Applied Plant Sciences.

"Just by knowing that this allele behaves in this epigenetic fashion, I can breed plants that either have full coloration or no coloration or anything in between, because I am manipulating epigenetic variation and not genetic variation. And color, of course, is only one trait that could be affected."

With a longtime specialization in the molecular basis for unexpected gene activity in plants, Hollick had zeroed in on an enzyme called RNA polymerase IV (Pol IV). Multiple types of RNA polymerases are responsible for setting gene expression in motion in all cells, and Pol IV is an enigmatic RNA polymerase that is known in plants to produce small RNA molecules.

Pol IV has puzzled scientists because despite its strong conservation in all plants, it appears to have no discernible impact on the development of Arabidopsis, a common model organism in plant biology. For example, when it is deleted from these plants, they show no signs of distress.

In corn, however, Hollick's lab had discovered previously that the absence of Pol IV creates clear problems in the plants, such as growing seeds in the tassel.

Hollick and colleagues observed that plants deficient in Pol IV also showed pigmentation in kernels of ears expected not to make any color at all ? meaning they were expected to be yellow.

"Since we knew the misplaced tassel-seed trait was due to misexpression of a gene, we hypothesized that this pigment trait might be due to a pigment regulator being expressed in a tissue where it normally is never expressed. Molecular analysis showed that that was in fact the case," Hollick said.

The researchers selected dark kernels and light kernels from multiple generations of plants and crossed the plants derived form these different kernel classes to create additional new generations of corn.

"We found that the ears developed from those plants had even more darkly colored kernels and fewer lightly colored kernels. We could segregate the extreme types and cross them together and get this continued intensification of the pigmentation over many generations," he said. "We generated more progeny that had increasing amounts of pigment. This is taking a gene that is genetically null, that doesn't have any function in this part of the plant, and turning it from a complete null to a completely dominant form that produces full coloration.

"Essentially we were breeding a novel trait, but not by selecting for any particular gene. We were just continually altering the epigenetic status of one of the two parental genomes every time."

This led the scientists to question why the affected alleles of the pigmentation gene would behave in this way. An investigation of the affected alleles revealed the nearby presence of a transposon, or transposable element: a tiny piece of DNA that has leapt from one area of the genome to another.

Because the sequence of some small RNA fragments that come from Pol IV's activity are identical to the sequence of these transposons, the finding made sense to the scientists.

"Now that we know that Pol IV is involved in regulating transposons, it's not surprising that genes that are near transposons are now regulated by Pol IV," Hollick said.

Honda minivan comes with a built-in vacuum

If we said the new 2014 Odyssey minivan sucked, Honda might just take that as a compliment. The updated Odyssey Touring Elite model debuting at the New York Auto Show will introduce a new feature likely to have significant appeal to family buyers ? the first in-car vacuum.

Big Week in the Big Apple as NY Auto Show Reveals Over Two Dozen New Vehicles

The HondaVAC is one of several new features being introduced on the 2014 Honda Odyssey which has gained steady momentum in an otherwise shrinking market segment.

Minivan sales are currently less than half of what they peaked at a decade ago, but there is still a sizable demand among family buyers who see them as the most functional and efficient people-movers on the market. The challenge is coming up with a consistent stream of new innovations.

Car buyers crave connectivity

?Honda is once again showcasing its reputation for innovation with HondaVAC, and its ability to provide true value to our customers,? proclaimed Michael Accavitti, vice president of marketing operations at American Honda.

The outgoing Odyssey attempted to show that Honda could inject a little style into the segment, as well. The 2014 update undergoes only modest exterior tweaks, however, with a more deeply sculpted hood and revised fenders, as well as a more distinctive twin-bar grille. There are also new LED taillamp bars and revised badging.

Like so many of its competitors, the Japanese maker is slashing mass to improve fuel economy ? as well as handling. The hood and front fenders are now stamped out of lightweight aluminum.

Inside, the Odyssey adds some new finishes to brighten the cabin, along with an all-new center stack housing a number of new high-tech features. That includes an updated HondaLink infotainment system that can link with an owner?s smartphone to access live, personalized radio ?stations? and also give voice access to updates and news feeds from Facebook and Twitter. The system can also be used to find a nearby restaurant and then check its reviews.

New NHTSA iPhone App Lets You Track Recalls, Crash Tests, Even Helps With Child Seats

The 2014 Honda Odyssey will get a new Expanded View Driver?s Mirror along with new active safety features such as Forward Collision Warning and Lane Departure Warning.

Safety is, of course, a critical issue for family buyers, and Odyssey has gained traction after scoring a five-star overall rating in the NHTSA crash tests. The 2013 model also was named a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

As for the HondaVAC, it was developed in cooperation with Shop-Vac and can operate continuously when the minivan?s engine is running. It will continue to operate for eight minutes after the engine is turned off.

UK's economy shrinks toward recession, again

By Olesya Dmitracova and Kate Holton

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain looks headed for recession and its current account deficit last year was the worst since 1989, data showed on Wednesday, dimming government hopes of a growth boost from exports and investment.

The Office for National Statistics confirmed that gross domestic product dropped 0.3 percent in the October-December period compared with the previous quarter, dragged down by sharp falls in industrial production and exports.

Separate data showed Britain's current account deficit came in at 14.037 billion pounds in the fourth quarter, overshooting forecasts.

For the full year, the gap between what Britain earns from trade and foreign investment and money flowing out of the country almost tripled to a shortfall of 57.679 billion pounds or 3.7 percent of GDP - the highest share of output since 1989.

The pound slipped against the dollar after the two releases.

"The long-awaited rebalancing of the economy remains elusive. The consumer has once again bailed out underperforming exports and business investment," said Andrew Goodwin, economic adviser at Ernst & Young.

"Prospects for Q1 remain on a knife edge," he added.

An economic contraction in the first quarter of 2013 would tip Britain into its third recession in less than five years.

Economists say that a long spell of cold weather may be adding to the chances of a new recession because snowfall in many areas probably curtailed shopping and may have disrupted some supply chains and staffing levels at companies.

So far, however, voters have shown a slight preference for the Conservative-led government's economic acumen over those of the opposition Labour party.

CONSUMERS TO THE RESCUE

Wednesday's figures showed that the household saving ratio fell to 6.7 percent in the fourth quarter. Britons' disposable income shrank 0.1 percent in real terms, but household spending held up, rising 0.4 percent and boosting the economy.

By contrast, the steepest decline in industrial output since early 2009 and a fall in exports weighed heavily on GDP.

Weak exports combined with resilient imports were behind the deterioration in Britain's current account position last year, which was also hit by a sharply smaller surplus on its net income account.

"The current account figures ... make for very dismal reading," said Monument Securities economist Marc Ostwald.

"The UK is running a twin deficit of the same sort of order as some of the worst offenders in the euro zone, so the idea that sterling is a safe haven should be under a lot of question," he added.

Michael Saunders, economist at Citi, attributed the current account gap also to a switch by British investors out of higher-yielding, riskier bonds and into safer but lower-returning debt during 2012. A slowdown in many European economies also hurt income from Britain's foreign direct investment.

The first estimate of first-quarter GDP due on April 25 will reveal whether Britain is in another recession.

Data from the first quarter of 2013 has been mixed so far: there was a sharp fall in manufacturing output in January but stronger survey evidence on the dominant service sector in February.

The ONS is due to publish its index of services data for January on Thursday, helping economists to gauge the economy's performance at the start of the year.

Latest forecasts by the independent Office for Budget Responsibility, used by the government for its budget, showed last week that Britain will eke out a meagre 0.6 percent growth this year - half what it predicted only a few months ago.

An Arbitrary Number of Years Since Mathematician Paul Erd s Birth

Today would?ve been the 100th anniversary of the Hungary-born mathematician who worked published so many papers and so many with a high impact that a playful measure of one?s academic affiliation with him has been created

I take issue with the celebration of Paul Erd?s? 100th birthday.

Not the celebration itself, but the number. Why 100? The number 100 was chosen, of course, because 10 is the base unit of our number system: we have 10 unique symbols (0-9) which can be combined to represent any conceivable number. Ten units of 10 is 100, so it?s a nice, neat factor. If we used a base-12 system we would have 12 unique symbols, and we?d be celebrating anniversaries of 144 years. But I can?t find any particular significance about 100 for Erd?s.

Paul Erd?s was born in 1913 in Hungary to Jewish parents, both mathematics teachers. He moved to Manchester in 1934 for a post-doctoral appointment, but also spent time (unofficially) working in London, Cambridge and Bristol: a trend of bouncing from institute to institute that would continue for the rest of his life. Erd?s did not return to Hungary until 1945, when Soviet troops liberated Budapest. Throughout his life he spent time living in the US, Israel and Britain, and visited Hungary often. But he had no permanent residence. He lectured, taught and worked at dozens of universities, but never held a permanent position at any of them. He died in 1996 of a heart attack while attending a conference in Warsaw.?

Next year will mark Erd?s? 101st birthday, which would be better than celebrating his 100th birthday because 101 is a prime number. You can?t divide 101 by anything but 1 and itself and still get a whole number (where 100 is the product of 2 x 2 x 5 x 5). Erd?s once told his biographer Paul Hoffman, in a somewhat beautiful and somewhat sad sentiment, that prime numbers were his best friends.

A large portion of Erd?s?s work involved prime numbers. The first significant theorem he ever proved, at age 17, stated that between any number and its double, there is at least one prime number. The Russian mathematical giant Chebyshev had already proven this theorem, called Bertrand?s conjecture, 80 years earlier, but Erd?s proof was simpler and clearer. Erd?s later did a similar job of simplifying the prime number theorem, which reveals how prime numbers will be distributed. Close to zero, prime numbers are common: 2,3,5,7, etc. As one climbs higher and higher, prime numbers occur more infrequently. (The prime number theorem doesn?t? show how to find those numbers, which are infinitely abundant. The largest known prime number is 257,885,161 ? 1, which has over 17.4 million digits).

Reducing proofs and theorems to their ?elementary? state was a particular talent of Erd?s?. He once wrote a simpler proof of a theorem in a paper he was supposed to be refereeing. Erd?s believed that ?the Supreme Fascist? (God) kept a book of mathematical proofs in their most perfect, simplified states, and it was the task of mathematicians to transcribe the pages from this book.

In some respects, zero was a rather significant number for Erd?s. He never married, never had children, never bought a home, never had a regular job or very much money, and never stayed in one location for very long. Instead he traveled, carrying all his worldly possessions in two suitcases, making a temporary home with collaborators. This style of living took him all over the U.S. and Europe. At last count, he published papers with 511 people.

Erd?s? terrible behavior as a house guest is a thing of legend: opening a carton of tomato juice by cutting a hole in it and not bothering to clean up the mess; banging pots and pans at 4:30 in the morning to wake everyone so they could continue their work.

Despite his obnoxious behavior, Erd?s was usually welcomed back, and remained friends with most of the people he visited. Reportedly, he was a radiantly happy person, a delightful collaborator, and had a gift for getting people to do the best mathematics they were capable of.? In fact, a more fitting day of celebration for Erd?s might be December 26, 2039, or 1,521 months after his birth; 1,521 is the total number of papers Erd?s collaborated on, which is more than any other mathematician in history.

Top of the Lake

TOTL Anita and Matt's Edenic encounter

In Slate?s Top of the Lake TV Club, Dan Kois will IM about each episode of Jane Campion?s Kiwi miniseries with another fan of the show. This week, he chats with Brow Beat editor David Haglund.

Dan Kois: Hey David! I'm glad you're here to discuss this week's episode of Top of the Lake, which saw Austrian barman/lederhosen enthusiast Wolfie commit suicide (or did he?), Matt Mitcham take a bad trip with poor chimp-mourning Anita, and Robin and Johnno do a bit more of the wrong thing before they do the right thing.

Kois: But my first question for you, obviously, is: What is the nature of the human mind?

David Haglund: Ask something a little more personal, Dan.

Haglund: We also learned that Robin was Johnno's first kiss, while Johnno was only Robin's "first long kiss." Their relationship is fascinating to me. In a show that is largely about sexual violence and consent, the first bit of the wrong thing we see them do has him going down on her in a bathroom, without asking, after she tells him forcefully to "move away." Campion may seem heavy-handed to some, but I think she sees the complexity of human relationships pretty clearly.

Kois: Yes, I too love the weirdness of Robin and Johnno?including when, in last week's episode, she posted him up on the Suspect board with all the other Mitcham boys.?To us, of course, he's not really a suspect?but her attraction to him seems all wrapped up in her extremely complicated feelings about this small town and her history here.

Kois: Plus, he has a Sex Tent.

Haglund: Yes, and a drug conviction. Why did he want her to wear the engagement ring? That was an odd touch.

Kois: Because he's screwed up!

Kois: There are plenty of people on this show whose sex lives are all wrapped up in their ability (or inability) to connect to others. Bunny, who gives Sarge seven minutes of Paradise upstairs at the pub because otherwise she'll get compulsively attached.

Kois: Or Matt, who surprised me with his softer side in admitting his impotence (and lack of interest) to Anita at the end of their super-weird date.

Haglund: It's not a date?it's an apology. Either way, it is indeed super-weird.

Kois: What did you make of Matt's foray into Paradise? And of his self-flagellating visit to his mom's grave?

Haglund: It did seem to show a softer side, like you said?and the apparent mommy complex added some shadings to his misogyny. Their Adam-and-Eve-style frolic seemed to me a celebration of sex and nature?Anita's floral tattoo was a lovely visual grace note?but I was struck that it was partly drug-induced. The ginger son also had a chemical experience with "erotic overtones" in this episode.

Kois: I dunno, I thought their frolic was a real low point of the episode, though I appreciated it more in retrospect once Matt started hitting himself with a belt. But for a while there I was like, Come on, Jane Campion.

Kois: WAY too much. I mean, I don't really care about on-screen drug trips anyway, but in this case?when there's so much that's more interesting going on?it seemed particularly self-indulgent. You ever get the feeling Jane Campion doesn't care where Tui is?

Haglund: Well, Matt Mitcham doesn't either. And most of the police seem convinced she's already dead. Robin is the only character (mostly) focused on her whereabouts, so I'm not tremendously bothered by Tui's occasional disappearance not just from home but from the TV show ostensibly centered on finding her. It's maybe a slight flaw, but this isn't a procedural?as the Matt-and-Anita romp makes clear, this is a show largely about varieties of sexual experience.

Kois: Maybe I just thought that was the dullest of all the varieties.

Haglund: But a variety nonetheless!

Kois: Well, despite me and Robin being the only ones, I still care about Tui, you monster. She?s a 12-year-old girl. So let's review: She's not at Mitcham's?that under-the-bathroom secret chamber is a drug lab, not a hideaway.

Kois: She's not at Wolfie's. Sorrie Kitten.

Kois: But there is someone out there with a blue hoodie who knows more on the subject.

Haglund: Yes. And I was a little confused by that video. They found it at Wolfie's, right? But he didn't shoot it?

Kois: That's my best guess?that he shot the lederhosen scenes but that someone else shot the later moments with Tui. In an attempt to frame him posthumously?

Haglund: Huh. Maybe. The video seemed to go seamlessly from Austrian-style folk dancing to mysterious running in the woods, which is ... odd. Though again, I don't think it makes a lot of sense to get hung up on standard procedural-style realism when it comes to this show. Fretting about proper police jurisdiction in the Pacific Rim, for instance, is a complete waste of time.

Kois: Yes, that's true. Also, it is hard for me to imagine that Robin can actually get DNA samples from every man in Laketop, as is apparently her plan.?

Kois: I've been interested, though, speaking of the police, at how Al Parker?or Detective Sergeant Faramir, as I think of him?has become Robin's biggest (only) supporter inside the force. He seems to have her back, even to the point of not minding when she spears some mulleted jerk with a dart.

Kois: But I can't say I have a good feeling about his invitation to Sunday dinner. That sort of seems like an inappropriate way to respond when someone tells you on the phone she's cracked the case.

Haglund: Right. Sunday dinner?! And we already know he's in cahoots with Matt (were those drugs Matt gave him on the boat?), so it's not like he's an upstanding guy. His support for Robin may be purely strategic.

Kois: I thought Matt was giving him like a monthly bribe, but either way, they're entirely too chummy. I think they're plotting something.

Kois: After all, plotting and scheming, planning and calculating?that is the nature of mind.

Awful Ford Figo Ad: Silvio Berlunsconi, Gagged Women - Business ...

Updated:? Ford and JWT issued an apology. Read more here.

Previously:

JWT India created a series of disturbing ads for the Ford Figo, one of which shows former Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi ?flashing a peace sign from the front seat of a car that has three curvaceous women tied up and gagged in the trunk.

It's not clear if Ford approved the ads, or if the agency was just publishing some speculative renderings to show off its creative chops. JWT India is Ford's agency for the Figo in that country, however. And India is known for its politically incorrect advertising ? Hitler shows up in ads there on a regular basis. It is possible that JWT India was trying to draw attention towards the controversy-laden Western cultures rather than try to make a statement on the role of women in society ? although it's hard to see this as anything but tasteless.

If you click to expand the image, it's evident that the woman in the sexy schoolgirl outfit is crying.

The tag line reads: "Leave your worries behind with Figo's extra-large boot," clearly referencing Berlusconi's many affairs and bunga bunga parties.

Another shows Paris Hilton taking out her reality television competition: The Kardashians.

What were they thinking?

We have reached out to JWT and Ford and are awaiting comment.

Now Is the Time for the GOP to Move Forward on Same-Sex Marriage

Should the Republican Party abandon its official opposition to gay marriage? Yahoo News asked conservative and GOP voters to share where they'd like their party to stand on the issue.

COMMENTARY | As a card-carrying Republican my entire voting life, and living in one of the most conservative, right-leaning states in the country in Wyoming, the gay marriage issue has come up more than once in conversations with family, co-workers, and friends.

If the Republican Party is to move forward in being the party of inclusiveness rather than being viewed as a bunch of old, white, racist, bigots, then the time is now to alter its view of gay marriage. Being gay in 2013 is not the same as it once was. It is no longer the view of most Americans as a mental illness or a perversion. People are who they are, whether my fellow brethren within the party care to admit that or not.

I am a moderate Republican. I don't drink the Kool-Aid on everything my party stands for. I have my own mind, as do many Americans. Jon Huntsman, the former governor of Utah, has softened his stance-formerly that of supporting civil unions, but opposed to gay marriage, now believes gay couples should have the same matrimonial rights as straight couples. If the GOP has eyes for the White House in '16, moderation and party policy change begins today.

(AP) ? Eager to reassure an anxious ally, President Barack Obama on Wednesday affirmed Israel's sovereign right to defend itself from any threat and vowed to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. He said containment of a nuclear-armed Iran was not an option and said the United States would do whatever it takes to prevent Iran from getting "the world's worst weapons."

Meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on his first visit to the Jewish state as president, Obama offered his personal commitment that the U.S. would stand by Israel in any circumstances that required it to act to protect its people. He said the U.S. and Israel would start talks soon on a new, 10-year security cooperation package to replace one that expires in 2017.

Obama also pledged to investigate whether chemical weapons were used this week in neighboring Syria's 2-year-old civil war, something he said would be a "game-changer" for current U.S. policy. In addition, he said he would continue to urge Israel and the Palestinians to relaunch the moribund peace process.

Speaking at a joint news conference, Obama and Netanyahu, who have sparred on numerous occasions in the past, presented a united front on Iran.

They stressed repeatedly that all options ? including military ones ? are on the table to keep Iran from acquiring an atomic weapon if the diplomatic track fails. And they brushed aside apparent differences over when the Iranian nuclear program might reach the point that military action is required.

"We will do what is necessary to prevent Iran from obtaining the world's worst weapons," Obama said, calling a nuclear-armed Iran a threat to Israel, the greater Middle East and the world.

Although Obama did not promise that the United States would act militarily against Iran if Israel decided that must be done, he offered an explicit endorsement for Israel to take whatever unilateral measures it deems necessary to guard against the threat.

"Each country has to make its own decisions when it comes to the awesome decision to engage in any kind of military action and Israel is differently situated than the United States," he said. "I would not expect that the prime minister would make a decision about his country's security and defer that to any another country any more than the United States would defer our decisions about what was important for our national security."

Netanyahu seized on the remarks, saying they were an important demonstration of America's steadfast alliance with Israel and part of making the carrot-and-stick approach a credible option to avoid the use of force.

"I am absolutely convinced that the president is determined to prevent Iran from getting nuclear weapons," he said. "I appreciate that. I appreciate the fact that the president has reaffirmed, more than any other president, Israel's right and duty to defend itself by itself against any threat."

Netanyahu said the carrot-and-stick approach now being employed to cajole Iran into proving that's its nuclear intentions are peaceful had to be bolstered by "a clear and credible threat of military action." Obama's recognition of Israel's right to act alone appeared to satisfy him on that score, and the prime minister beamed with delight in response to the new security pact talks.

On another issue of critical importance to Israel's security, Obama said the U.S. is investigating whether chemical weapons were deployed in Syria earlier this week. He said he was "deeply skeptical" of contentions by Syrian President Bashar Assad's government that rebel forces were behind any such attack.

Both the Assad government and Syrian rebels have accused each other of using chemical weapons in an attack on Tuesday.

Obama said the U.S. policy not to intervene militarily or arm Syrian rebels thus far is based on his desire to solve the problem with world partners. He rejected as "inaccurate" suggestions that the United States had done nothing to stop two years of bloodshed that has claimed more than 70,000 lives.

"It's a world problem when tens of thousands of people are being slaughtered, including innocent women and children," Obama said.

Obama's three-day visit to Israel, from its start earlier Wednesday, is designed to send a message of reassurance to a key ally.

At an extravagant welcoming ceremony, Obama declared that "peace must come to the Holy Land" and not at Israel's expense. U.S. backing for Israel will be a constant as the Middle East roils with revolution and Iran continues work on its nuclear program, he said.

"The United States is proud to stand with you as your strongest ally and your greatest friend," Obama said after landing at Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion International Airport.

"Across this region the winds of change bring both promise and peril," he said, calling his visit "an opportunity to reaffirm the unbreakable bonds between our nations, to restate America's unwavering commitment to Israel's security, and to speak directly to the people of Israel and to your neighbors."

Seeking to alter a perception among many Israelis that his government has been less supportive of Israel than previous U.S. administrations, Obama declared the U.S.-Israeli alliance "eternal."

"It is forever," he said to applause as Israeli and U.S. flags fluttered in a steady breeze under clear, sunny skies.

Before leaving the airport for Jerusalem, Obama offered a vivid display of the U.S. commitment to Israeli security by visiting a missile battery that is part of Israel's Iron Dome defense from militant rocket attacks. The United States has invested hundreds of millions of dollars in developing the system with Israel.

Obama and Netanyahu toured the battery, which Israel relocated to the airport for the occasion. They met and chatted with soldiers who operate the system that Israel credits with intercepting hundreds of rockets during a round of fighting against Gaza militants last November.

In his comments to reporters with Netanyahu, Obama also took note of the difficult way forward in the broader quest for Mideast peace, acknowledging that in recent years "we haven't gone forward, we haven't seen the kind of progress that we would like to see."

The president said he came to the region principally to listen, and hoped to return home with a better understanding of the constraints and "how the U.S. can play a constructive role."

Netanyahu, for his part, said he was willing to set aside preconditions in future talks with the Palestinians, adding that it was time to "turn a page in our relations."

Obama is to meet Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas in the West Bank on Thursday to assure him that an independent Palestinian state remains a U.S. foreign policy and national security priority ? even though he is bringing no new plan to restart negotiations with Israel.

Obama said he would outline his thinking in greater detail after he sees Abbas when he delivers a speech to Israeli university students, during which he will reiterate his position that a two-state solution is the only feasible outcome.

Although many Israelis warmly greeted Obama, Palestinians held several small protests in the West Bank and Gaza. Demonstrators in the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip burned posters of Obama and U.S. flags, accusing the U.S. of being biased toward Israel.

In the West Bank, about 200 activists erected about a dozen tents in an area just outside of Jerusalem to draw attention to Israel's policy of building settlements. The tents were pitched in E1, a strategically located area where Israel has said it plans on building thousands of homes. The U.S. has harshly criticized the plan.
