Prioritizing Your Life | Norcal Strength & Conditioning

In today?s American society, our lives are rushed, they are busy, they are overloaded. ?We feel unaccomplished throughout the day if we haven?t gotten up early to catch up on emails, prep for the day, work for 8+ hours, hit the gym, go home to clean the house and get laundry done as we try to prepare something healthy for dinner, catch up on some family time and try to have 5 minutes to decompress before heading to bed?just to get up and do it all over again. ?Is this the right way to live? ?Is this healthy for us? ?Is a life like this something we will reflect back on when we?re in our 80?s and say, ?I have lived the life I wanted to live.?? ?There is no right or wrong answer to this question, but I think it?s important that we have a little self-reflection to determine if we?re following the path we want to rather than the path we think we need to.

Destiny is not a matter of chance, but of choice. Not something to wish for, but to attain. ?~?William Jennings Bryan

?

When you look at your daily lifestyle, do you feel like the majority of the time you are doing what you want? ?Does your job make you happy? ?Do you spend enough time with your loved ones? ?Do you take time for yourself? ?When was the last time you learned something new? ?When was the last time you read a book because you wanted to? ?Are you financially in a place you want to be? ?If the answer to any of these questions isn?t what you want, then why aren?t you doing something about it?

I just spent a weekend in San Diego coaching at the Invictus Athlete?s Camp, and in the process was reminded of a valuable lesson. ?Heidi Fearon is who the Invictus crew calls their healer. ?She has a holistic approach toward health and fitness and practices it in her career, her life and is passionate about helping others do the same. ?She spoke this weekend about the mental aspect of training. ?She touched on visualization, positive self-talk, self-reflection, goal setting, and more. ?The part that hit home was her suggestion of taking some time to write down what things make up our life. ?It may be your family, your job, your training, your dog, your visions/goals, or your hobbies. ?Once you write down all of the things that compose your life, number them from what takes the most time out of your day to the least. ?Now comes the fun part, assess how your life is currently prioritized and then reassess if this is how you want it to be. ?Hopefully it matches up to a ?T?. ?But if not, it?s time to start coming up with a plan to implement in your life to make it follow a path you want. ?You can get as specific as you want with this?you can break down time you spend with each loved one individually, time for spirituality/religion, time for food planning, time for training in the gym, time for yourself professionally, time for yourself personally, the list goes and on and on and will change from person to person. ?I was shocked when I did this. ?What I thought was close to the top of the list, was really actually very close to the bottom. ?This not something to rush through and just throw on paper. ?Take some time to actually get a true perspective on your life and start to prioritize in a way that will get you going in the direction you want to go. ?You will learn something about yourself along the way.
