Study: DVRs now in half of US pay-TV homes

(AP) ? A new survey finds that digital video recorders are now in more than half of all U.S. homes that subscribe to cable or satellite TV services.

Leichtman Research Group's survey of 1,300 households found that 52 percent of the ones that have pay-TV service also have a DVR. That translates to about 45 percent of all households and is up from 13.5 percent of all households surveyed five years ago by another firm, Nielsen.

The first DVRs came out in 1999, from TiVo Inc. and ReplayTV. Later, they were built into cable set-top boxes. The latest trend is "whole-home" DVRs that can distribute recorded shows to several sets.

Even with the spread of DVRs, live TV rules. Nielsen found last year that DVRs accounted for 8 percent of TV watching.

(AP) ? A nanny accused in the stabbing deaths of two children in her care at their upscale Manhattan home pleaded not guilty Wednesday inside a hospital room where she's been treated for self-inflicted stab wounds.

Yoselyn Ortega ? lying handcuffed in her hospital bed in silence, her right hand trembling ? entered the plea through her defense attorney.

"I ask you to enter a not guilty plea on behalf of my client," said the lawyer, Valerie Van Leer-Greenberg.

Van Leer-Greenberg also told Judge Lewis Bart Stone that her client remains "profoundly, medically impaired and in need of medical attention."

Stone ordered Ortega held without bail while she undergoes psychiatric exam. The judge, like two prosecutors and everyone else crowded into the room, wore a hospital gown.

Ortega, 50, appeared alert but didn't speak during the 10-minute hearing.

She had a tube leading to her throat, but was breathing on her own. She wore a blue hair net. No wounds were visible.

The hospital room was sparse: There were no flowers, photos or other personal items on display.

The unusual bed-side arraignment came as District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. announced an indictment charging Ortega with multiple counts of murder.

"This crime shocked and horrified parents around the city, many of whom entrust their children to the care of others both by necessity and by choice," Vance said in a statement. "My heart goes out to the family of those beautiful young children, and I hope that, with time, this family will heal."

Van Leer-Greenberg left the hospital without speaking to reporters.

Authorities allege that on the evening of Oct. 25, while the children's mother was out with a third child, Ortega repeatedly stabbed 6-year-old Lucia Krim and her 2-year-old brother, Leo.

When their mother, Marina Krim, returned with her 3-year-old daughter, she found their bodies in the bathtub, with Ortega lying on the bathroom floor with stab wounds to her neck. A kitchen knife was nearby.

The children's father, CNBC digital media executive Kevin Krim, had been away on a business trip when the killings occurred.

The couple's apartment building sits in one of the city's most idyllic neighborhoods, a block from Central Park, near the Museum of Natural History and blocks from Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. The neighborhood is home to many affluent families, and seeing children accompanied by nannies is an everyday part of life there.

Some of Ortega's friends and relatives said she appeared to be struggling emotionally and financially recently, but they still couldn't believe she could have committed such a heinous act.

Poison pens and lipstick guns: 8 real-life spy weapons

South Korean authorities capture an assassin armed with deadly gadgets almost as implausible as this collection of espionage gear.

Newly crowned "Sexiest Man Alive" Kim Jong Un isn't the biggest fan of Park Sang-hak, an anti-Pyongyang defector now living in South Korea who's near the top of North Korea's hit list. The outspoken activist was recently the target of a would-be assassin equipped with three seemingly innocent, easy-to-conceal weapons plucked straight from a 007 script. A South Korea "investigation official," speaking with CNN, described the weapons thus: A poison-tipped device built to look like a Parker ballpoint pen; a second pen equipped to shoot poison-filled bullets directly into the skin; and a small flashlight rigged to fire three bullets at close range. "You'd notice a gun," said Park, "but these weapons are so innocuous [they could] easily kill someone [without warning]. I'd be dead immediately." Park is hardly the first to be the target of top-secret spy weaponry. Here, eight other imaginative killing devices that have actually been produced:?

1. Lipstick gun
Meet the "kiss of death." This famous Cold War-era pistol may look like an ordinary lipstick, but it was designed by KGB operatives to let a Soviet femme fatale fire a single 4.5mm bullet at anyone unlucky enough to get caught in her cross-hairs.?

2. Exploding rats
During World War II, Britain's Special Operations Executive (SOE) devised a clever plan to blow up enemy boilers by hiding explosive rat carcasses in German coal piles. Supposedly, an unsuspecting enemy would simply toss the dead rat into the nearby fire to dispose of the body and... kaboom! The plan went awry when German authorities seized the first consignment of the devices ? and went on to showcase them in the country's top military academies.

3. Flamethrower glove
Patrick Priebe, a cyberpunk weapons hobbyist, designed this hand-mounted flamethrower using just four lithium ion batteries, butane, a NE555 circuit board, and a transformer to spew fire right from his palm.?

4. Umbrella dart gun
Just one day before his 1978 death in London, Bulgarian dissident writer Georgi Markov felt a sharp prick in his thigh. He looked up to see a man clumsily fiddling with an umbrella before speeding off. The brolly had shot a dart loaded with a pellet of ricin, a sophisticated poison. The pellet was coated in a special wax designed to melt at body temperatures, releasing the ricin into the bloodstream. The shooter, believed to be a member of the Bulgarian secret police, was never caught.?

5. Exploding chocolate
Prime Minister Winston Churchill did not like the Nazis. And the Nazis did not like Prime Minister Winston Churchill, as evidenced by a letter written by a high-ranking World War II-era British intelligence officer, referencing a bizarre Nazi assassination plot to kill the boisterous politician with explosive chocolate. "We have received information that the enemy are using pound slabs of chocolate which are made of steel with a very thin cover of chocolate," wrote Lord Victor Rothschild of British intelligence. "Inside there is a high explosive and some form of delay mechanism." Fortunately, British spies discovered the candy bombs, which were to be placed around the War Cabinet's dining room, before anyone could have a taste.

6. Pistol glove
Another product of the Cold War-era KGB, this glove-cum-pistol be fired with the twitch of a finger. "It gave the wearer the ability to get within point blank range before firing a lethal shot," says Buck Sexton at The Blaze. "Oddjob would be proud."

7. Poisoned cigars
On August 16, 1960, a CIA official was handed a box of Fidel Castro's favorite cigars? along with instructions to rig them with a deadly poison. The cigars were treated with a toxin called botulinum, reportedly so potent it could kill any man who attempted to light one of the cigars. Though the cigars were duly doctored, it's unclear if they ever even made it into Castro's vicinity.?

8. CIA's heart-attack gun
During a mid-1970s Senate testimony, it was revealed that the CIA had developed a dart gun capable of causing a heart attack. The dart ? which could penetrate clothing, leave skin unmarked except for a small red bump resembling a mosquito bite, and then disintegrate ? was filled with a deadly shellfish toxin. The advantage, says InfoWars, was that officials would attribute the victim's death to natural causes in the event of an autopsy. It's unclear if the heart attack gun was actually ever used.?

Pioneers, former mayor honoured at Douglas Day

An annual event held to thank Langley?s pioneers for all they have done for the community also celebrated an individual who was bestowed with a very special honour.

More than 200 Langley Township and City pioneers and dozens of guests attended the Douglas Day celebration at the Langley Events Centre on Nov. 19, where they enjoyed lunch, entertainment, and a unique presentation.

A Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal was awarded to former Township of Langley staff member and mayor Kurt Alberts. Created to mark the 60th anniversary of Her Majesty?s accession to the Throne, the medal is presented to those who have demonstrated dedicated service to their peers, community, and to Canada.

As a member of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, the Township was given a medal to present to a community builder, and Township Council chose Alberts as the well-deserved recipient.

?Whether guiding the evolution of our community as the Township?s Director of Community Development or demonstrating leadership and vision as our mayor, Kurt Alberts has helped create an exceptional quality of life for residents by advocating for improvements throughout the community,? said Langley Township Mayor Jack Froese, who presented the medal to Alberts.

After graduating from the University of Waterloo, Alberts started his career as a planner in Ontario before coming to B.C. In 1981, he and his wife Brenda moved to Fort Langley, where they operate the Birthplace of B.C. art gallery.

Alberts served as Langley Township?s Director of Community Development from 1981 to 1997, then took on a role as an elected official when he became mayor from 1999 to 2008.

During that time, he was instrumental in developing the community of Walnut Grove and the Township?s Rural Plan and worked to get the Greater Vancouver Regional District to recognize Langley as a Regional Town Centre in the Livable Region Strategy adopted in 1996.

With a passion for preserving green space, Alberts took on initiatives such as the Township?s Arbour Ribbon, the Fort-to-Fort Trail, and the expansion of Derby Reach. He helped develop the Hope Redwoods natural area and worked to secure significant areas of wildlife habitat in the West Creek Wetlands.

Alberts contributed to the Adopt-a-Street Program, helped create additional playing fields in Aldergrove, and worked to develop partnerships for the Langley Events Centre. He was also committed to the dredging of the Bedford channel and waterfront development in Fort Langley, and to the creation of Langley?s Gateway of Hope.

Alberts has been recognized for his dedication to heritage conservation and for his volunteer service as a Rotarian.

During the Douglas Day celebration, Langley residents who are at least 70 years of age and have lived in the Township or the City for more than 60 years also enjoyed musical entertainment by Mixed Company, shared stories and memories, and socialized.

The event is held each year to pay tribute to pioneering families whose hard work, values, and traditions helped shape our community. It commemorates the founding of the Crown Colony of British Columbia in Fort Langley on Nov. 19, 1858, and recognizes the appointment of Sir James Douglas as the first Governor of B.C.

Douglas Day has been recognized in the Township of Langley since the 1920s and the banquet has been held annually for more than 60 years. In 1946, the celebration of Douglas Day was established by municipal bylaw. While many municipalities in the Lower Mainland celebrated Douglas Day in the past, Langley is one of the few to continue the tradition.

Cracks In The Conservative Armor (The Note)

By MICHAEL FALCONE ( @michaelpfalcone ) and AMY WALTER ( @amyewalter )

NOTABLES:

THE CABINET SHUFFLE: As President Obama prepares for his second term, preparations have begun for the traditional shuffling of the Cabinet, ABC's Jake Tapper reports. Top priority for the president: Choosing successors for Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Secretary of the Treasury Tim Geithner. To replace Clinton, Democratic insiders suggest that U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice is the frontrunner despite facing criticism for the erroneous comments she made on Sunday shows after the attack on the U.S. compound in Benghazi, Libya. Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., also a viable candidate for State. To replace Geithner at Treasury, White House chief of staff Jack Lew is thought to have the inside track if he wants it, with other possibilities including Neal Wolin, the current Deputy Secretary of the Treasury and Lael Brainard, current Under Secretary of the Treasury for International Affairs. Other informed sources suggest that there is consideration being given to a business or CEO type such as investor Roger Altman, former Time-Warner chair Richard Parsons, and Facebook's Sheryl Sandberg. WATCH Tapper's "Good Morning America" report and read more about the cabinet shuffle below: http://abcn.ws/Sl3mus

SUSAN RICE: 'PILING ON' OR 'POLITICAL SMOKESCREEN'? President Obama has yet to say whether he will nominate U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice to succeed Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State, but tensions between Democrats and Republicans over her public statements in the aftermath of the Benghazi attack continue to run high. "This Week" headliner Sen. Lindsey Graham told ABC's George Stephanopoulos on Sunday that he does not believe Rice relied on the most accurate information from the intelligence community when she provided a public explanation for the attack on the U.S. consulate. "I'm increasingly convinced that the best and current intelligence assessment on 16 September went against the video. The video was a political smokescreen," Graham said. But Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., disagreed: "I can just tell you, if this were an NFL football game, the critics of Ambassador Rice would be penalized for piling on. For goodness sake, she got the report from the intelligence community. She dutifully reported it to the public, just exactly what we expect her to do." http://abcn.ws/RaMVCK

'NIGHTLINE' EXCLUSIVE - INSIDE THE HUNT FOR BIN LADEN: In an exclusive television interview, ABC News Senior Foreign Affairs Correspondent Martha Raddatz speaks with Oscar-winning director Kathryn Bigelow and Oscar-winning screenwriter Mark Boal about their new movie, "Zero Dark Thirty." The movie details the decade-long intelligence gathering effort to hunt down Osama Bin Laden and culminates with the nighttime raid on his compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. Raddatz also has a preview on tonight's edition of "World News" and tune in for the extended interview on "Nightline."

THE GREAT BI-PARTISAN SHAVE-OFF: With the presidential election long behind them, two of the parties' top flacks joined forces in a show of bald bipartisanship Sunday on "This Week with George Stephanopoulos," ABC's Julie Percha reports. Thanks to a little buzz shear help from ABC News' Jon Karl (who confessed, "I have never done this before"), Democratic National Committee spokesperson Brad Woodhouse and Republican National Committee spokesperson Sean Spicer lost their locks on our show - and it's all for a good cause. Before the election, the DNC's Woodhouse tweeted a bet to his Republican counterpart, Spicer. The deal: Whoever's candidate won the election would shave the loser's head, on national television. But rather than let Spicer go bald alone, the pair decided to team up to support the St. Baldrick's Foundation, a national non-profit that raises money for childhood cancer research grants by shaving the heads of volunteers. As of this morning, Spicer had received $5,445 for St. Baldrick's and Woodhouse, $6,451. For more information, or to donate, check out Spicer and Woodhouse's fundraising pages. http://bit.ly/TU4m7b

THE NOTE:

So much for pledges?

As lawmakers return to Washington today, the deadline to put on the brakes before the country plunges off the fiscal cliff is now in sight, and it appears that both sides are open to some wheeling and dealing.

For Republicans, that may mean breaking a promise many of them made not to raise taxes.

"When you're $16 trillion in debt, the only pledge we should be making to each other is to avoid becoming Greece," Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., told ABC's George Stephanopoulos yesterday in a "This Week" interview. "Republicans should put revenue on the table."

But for Americans for Tax Reform president Grover Norquist, the spirit of the pledge seems as alive as ever even as GOP lawmakers like Graham publicly contemplate defecting.

"What the pledge does of course is allows elected officials to make it clear openly to their voters where they stand," Norquist said in an interview with ABC's David Kerley. "Are they going to be with reforming government or raising taxes to continue more of the same?" http://abcn.ws/Sk11QC

Norquist is casting the pledge as lawmakers' "commitment to their constituents" - rather than to him - and he told ABC News over the weekend that the hundreds who have signed it "are largely keeping it."

But other prominent Republicans are joining Graham, including Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., Sen. Saxby Chambliss, R-Ga., and Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., who signaled his openness to re-thinking the pledge yesterday on NBC's "Meet The Press."

"The world is changed and the economic situation is different," King said.

Of course, Graham on "This Week" and other GOP members of Congress who appeared on the Sunday talk shows qualified their support for raising revenue on not raising tax rates but rather on capping certain deductions.

And for all the talk of taxes, there's another elephant in the room that gets a lot less attention: Entitlement reform.

"I will violate the pledge - long story short - for the good of the country only if Democrats will do entitlement reform," Graham said.

Also appearing on "This Week," Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., acknowledged that "meaningful reforms" for Medicare should be on the table.

"Only 12 years of solvency lie ahead if we do nothing," Durbin said. "So those who say don't touch it, don't change it are ignoring the obvious."

But how many other Democrats are going to be willing to see serious reform as part of the discussion?

NOTE IT!

ABC's RICK KLEIN: Grover Norquist is correct. The "pledge" is between elected officials and their constituents, not candidates and the man whose name has become synonymous with the anti-tax promise. But that's what makes the breaks in the ranks significant: Republican lawmakers are talking publicly about defying the pledge knowing full well the political risk that brings. While shockingly little progress was made in fiscal cliff talks at the staff level during the Thanksgiving break, the time won't have been wasted if lawmakers used it to come to terms with the plunge they're about to take.

ABC Political Analyst MATT DOWD: "Grover Norquist is an impediment to good governing and ? the only good thing about Grover Norquist is he's named after a character from 'Sesame Street.'"

BEN AFFLECK: SHINING A SPOTLIGHT ON THE CONGO. Yesterday George Stephanopoulos spoke with actor and activist Ben Affleck on "This Week." Affleck - the founder of the Eastern Congo Initiative - spoke about the conflict in war-torn Congo that has flared up as rebels seized control of the eastern city of Goma last week. "There's a huge amount that the U.S. can do, frankly. I mean, we have a lot of levers there. We can engage in the kind of high-level, shuttle diplomacy that you saw be so effective in Gaza," said Affleck, who expressed concern about the deteriorating conditions in the African nation. Affleck was joined by Rep. Adam Smith, D-Wash., who argued that the United States - tied up at the moment by recent events in the Middle East - can and should exert influence in the troubled region in Africa. "Well, we have a lot of influence in the region. I just want to emphasize that we are in a position to make a difference there. We have built relationships with Uganda, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Kenya, a lot of it around Somalia, Al-Shabaab, Lord's Resistance Army coming out of Uganda. We have influence in the region with key players," Smith said. http://abcn.ws/XS9bnP

"THIS WEEK" REWIND - FISCAL CLIFF PREDICTIONS:

-MATT DOWD, ABC News political analyst: "I think it'll be a short-term deal, it'll be a short-term fix, it'll be a fix on some revenue, some expenditures. It won't go much past two years. They won't do anything on entitlements. They don't really make any fundamental changes in those programs. It'll be a short-term deal to get done."

-RUTH MARCUS, Washington Post columnist: "The Republican House offer that came in the aftermath of that very nice-sounding meeting with words of encouragement and moderation and flexibility on both sides, it was an offer, as far as I have reported, that did not reflect the impact of the election."

-PEGGY NOONAN, Wall Street Journal columnist: "I think the president and the speaker could see this as an opportunity, this fiscal cliff thing, to convince people, you know what, we still can govern, and that would be heartening."

-JOE KLEIN, Time Magazine: "I think that ? this election mattered, in a way. I think that there was a tremendous fever in the country, a fever of intransigence and partisanship, and that fever has broken. I think Grover Norquist's sell-by date has passed. And Obama has already put entitlement reforms on the table in his private negotiations with - with Boehner a year ago. And I think that we're going to get a deal. We may go over the cliff for a week or two weeks or whatever, but I'm optimistic that there's going to be a deal."

-DAVID SANGER, The New York Times: "The president's leverage goes up as you get closer to that date, George, because - exactly because the taxes all go up, at that moment, then he's just negotiating about how much to cut them back down. And I suspect that as they get closer to the date, the Republicans are going to look at the president's leverage, post-January 1, and think they may not want to go face that."

"THIS WEEK" REWIND - LESSONS OF 'LINCOLN':

-DOWD: "I think one of the great things about that movie, beautiful movie, loved the movie, is - is that progress is never made through pure means. And that - I mean, if everybody has this vision of Lincoln and all that, this whole idea of Lincoln, he was so forthright in that, but basically he employed impure means in order to accomplish something that was going to make the country progress, the 13th Amendment, and that, I think, is a great lesson."

-MARCUS: "The president had this screening of 'Lincoln' at the White House, which I was not at, but he should have a regular 4 o'clock showing. Everybody should come, sit down in those nice seats, eat the popcorn, and recognize a few things, from the president's point of view, that nice words and lofty speeches, Gettysburg Address, are wonderful, but we also need sort of hard-headed, a little bit sleazy deal-making. Lobbying, we'll call it."

KLEIN: "I think that the ultimate message of that wonderful movie - I thought it was an act of patriotism on Spielberg's part to make it in that way - the ultimate message is, bring back earmarks ? Earmarks have always been the grease, you know, that greases the wheels that get things - get things done. I think John McCain did a tremendous disservice to this country by making such a huge campaign about earmarks, when there are far bigger and more important targets to be met."

COMMERCE SECRETARY: Any of the business or CEO types being discussed for Treasury Secretary (see above) could also serve as Secretary of Commerce, a position that for the Obama administration has proved as troublesome as the role of drummer in Spinal Tap. Jeff Zients, the acting director of the Office of Management & Budget, is said to be under consideration.

DEFENSE SECRETARY: It's too flip to refer to it as a consolation prize, but informed sources say that - with Defense Secretary Leon Panetta also planning on leaving - Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass. could be offered the position Secretary of Defense if he wants it, though he has suggested he only wants State. Another option, Michelle Flournoy, a former Under Secretary of Defense for Policy, would be the first female to serve in that position.

CHIEF OF STAFF: If Jack Lew leaves to take the position at Treasury, some possible replacements for him as chief of staff include deputy National Security Adviser Denis McDonough or Vice President Biden's current chief of staff Ron Klain. Tom Nides, Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources, has also been discussed.

THE INNER CIRCLE: President Obama's senior adviser David Plouffe has also long discussed leaving the White House. There are many options to file his shoes, including the elevation of communications director Dan Pfeiffer. Also possible: bringing back former press secretary Robert Gibbs, or former deputy chief of staff/campaign manager Jim Messina. Another option might be to bring in some of the people who were part of the messaging shop in the campaign - David Simus, who served as director of opinion research for the campaign, or Larry Grisolano, who did ads for campaign.

THE BUZZ:

with ABC's Elizabeth Hartfield ( @LizHartfield)

CYBER MONDAY: WHITE HOUSE RELEASES NEW REPORT ON MIDDLE CLASS TAX CUTS. The White released a new report from the National Economic Council and the Council of Economic Advisers this morning, which happens to be Cyber Monday, titled "The Middle Class Tax Cuts' Impact on Consumer Spending and Retailers." The report takes a look at what the Obama administration says will be the potential impact to retailers and consumer spending if Congress fails to extend tax cuts to the middle class by the end of the year as part of a deal to avoid the fiscal cliff. http://1.usa.gov/QFjNnb

NEW CONGRESS: FEWER MODERATES MAKE DEALS HARDER. The AP's Alan Fram reports: "When the next Congress cranks up in January, there will be more women, many new faces and 11 fewer tea party-backed House Republicans from the class of 2010 who sought a second term. Overriding those changes, though, is a thinning of pragmatic, centrist veterans in both parties. Among those leaving are some of the Senate's most pragmatic lawmakers, nearly half the House's centrist Blue Dog Democrats and several moderate House Republicans." http://apne.ws/TnTuQI

FISCAL CLIFF ALERT: WHO WILL JUMP? "Call them the cliff jumpers. A growing bloc of emboldened liberals say they're not afraid to watch defense spending get gouged and taxes go up on every American if a budget deal doesn't satisfy their priorities," notes Politico's Seung Min Kim. "Here's what these progressives fear: an agreement that keeps lower tax rates for the wealthy, hits the social safety net with unpalatable cuts and leaves Pentagon spending unscathed. In other words, they'd rather walk the country off the cliff than watch President Barack Obama cave on long-held liberal priorities." http://politi.co/UmA27L

GOING AROUND THE CHAMBER. Bloomberg's Julie Bykowicz reports: "The U.S. Chamber of Commerce shouts 'JOBS' with two-story-tall block letters strung on its building facing the White House. That might be the closest the business trade association gets to President Barack Obama's talks on skirting the fiscal cliff, a $607 billion combination of automatic spending cuts and tax increases scheduled to take effect in January. The chamber, which spent at least $50 million on political advertising backing Republican candidates who opposed Obama, is a bystander in the debate over Washington's most critical post- election issue. It is being supplanted by other business groups such as Fix the Debt and the Partnership for New York City." http://bloom.bg/S67Nb7

INSIDE THE WHITE HOUSE'S TAX OFFENSIVE. The New York Times' Michael D. Shear reports: "With lawmakers scheduled to return to work on Monday to begin intense discussions before a looming fiscal deadline, Mr. Obama's aides are trying to harness the passions that returned him to the White House, hoping to pressure Republicans in Congress to accept tax increases on the wealthy. The president's strategists are turning first to the millions of e-mail addresses assembled by the campaign and the White House. Already, supporters are being asked to record YouTube videos of themselves talking about the importance of raising taxes on the rich. Aides said those videos would be shared on Facebook and Twitter and would be forwarded to centrist Democrats, as well as to mainstream Republicans, who they hope will break with their Tea Party colleagues." http://nyti.ms/TpaeqP

FIGHT OVER SUSAN RICE HOLDS RISKS FOR OBAMA, GOP LAWMAKERS. The Hill's Justin Sink reports: "President Obama and congressional Republicans appear to be itching for a fight over U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice's possible nomination as Secretary of State. The ensuing political battle, however, comes with high risks and uncertain rewards for both sides. So far, President Obama has aggressively defended Rice from attacks by leading GOP lawmakers over her handling of the September attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya. But in doing so, Obama risks wasting his reelection political capital on a fight that may not be worth winning. A major battle over Rice's nomination could easily distract from the president's other priorities, beginning with the negotiations over the looming 'fiscal cliff.'" http://bit.ly/TYEXai

CONSERVATIVE ACTIVISTS URGE NEW GOP TONE. The Wall Street Journal's Neil King Jr. and Victoria McGrane report: "In digging to explain why the Republican Party fell short in the Nov. 6 election, some conservatives say the GOP needs to shed the perception that it is a defender of big business and large financial institutions. These activists-including tea-party activists but also some mainline Republicans-say the party should adopt a more populist tone, one that places more emphasis on ways Republican policies would help the middle class." http://on.wsj.com/Tg3wAM

IT'S BEGINNING TO LOOK A LOT LIKE CHRISTMAS (AT 1600 PENNSYLVANIA AVE.) Malia, Sasha, and first dog Bo joined the First Lady Michelle Obama to welcome the official White House Christmas tree over the long weekend reports ABC's Serena Marshall. The 19-foot Fraser fir from Peak Farms in Ashe County, N.C., was brought in on a wagon by two Clydesdale horses driven by two men donning top hats and red bow ties, while the Marine Band played "Oh Christmas Tree." The tree, which was selected in early October and harvested this month, will be placed on display in the Blue Room throughout the holiday season. Farm owners Rusty and Beau Estes are this year's grand champion winners of the National Christmas Tree Association, which has provided the White House tree each year since 1966. http://abcn.ws/10HzElR

Mike Lee, R-Utah, and Michael Farris of the Home School Legal Defense Association to oppose the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. According to a release from Santorum's Patriot Voices PAC, the UN treaty "threatens U.S. sovereignty and parental rights and would effectively put the U.S. under international law when it comes to parenting special needs children." The Santorums will bring their daughter Bella, a special needs child, to the news conference, which takes place at 4:30 on Capitol Hill.

Euro zone, IMF to seek Greece deal, debt write-off main problem

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Euro zone finance ministers and the International Monetary Fund will seek to unfreeze the second bailout package for Greece on Monday, but they first need to agree if some of the official loans to Athens might eventually be forgiven to cut Greek debt.

Euro zone ministers and their deputies have held numerous meetings and conference calls over the last two weeks to decide how Greek debt, seen at almost 190 percent of GDP next year, could be cut to a more sustainable 120 percent in 8-10 years.

Without agreement on how to reduce the debt, euro zone ministers and the IMF do not want to resume payments of loan tranches to Athens -- even though Greece has met all the conditions -- because they have no guarantee on whether the need for emergency financing will ever end.

The key question is: Can Greek debt become sustainable without the euro zone writing off some of the loans to Athens?

So far, the options for debt reduction under consideration include reducing interest on already extended bilateral loans to Greece from the current 150 basis points above financing costs.

How much lower is not yet decided -- France and Italy would like to reduce the rate to 30 basis points (bps), while Germany and some other countries insist on a 90 bps margin.

Another option, which could cut Greek debt by almost 17 percent of GDP, is to defer interest payments on loans to Greece from the EFSF, a temporary bailout fund, by 10 years.

The European Central Bank could forego profits on its Greek bond portfolio, bought at a deep discount, cutting the debt pile by a further 4.6 percent by 2020, a document prepared for the ministers' talks last week showed.

Not all euro zone central banks are prepared to forego their profits, however, the German Bundesbank among them.

Greece could also buy back its privately-held bonds on the market at a deep discount, with gains from the operation depending on the scope and price.

But the preparatory document from last week said that the 120 percent target could not be reached in 2020, only two years later, unless the ministers accept losses on their loans to Athens, provide additional financing or force private creditors into selling Greek debt at a discount.

The latest analysis for the ministers showed the debt could come down to 125 percent of GDP in 2020, one euro zone official with insight into the talks said.

FORGIVING OFFICIAL LOANS?

To cut the debt more boldly, the IMF wants the euro zone to forgive Greece some of the official loans, in what is called Official Sector Involvement (OSI) in EU jargon.

This is an idea that several countries, including Germany, the Netherlands, Finland and Slovakia, firmly reject.

On Monday, the biggest battle is likely to be over just that.

"OSI is at the core of the problems with reaching a deal," one euro zone official with insight into the talks said.

German central bank governor Jens Weidmann has suggested that Greece could "earn" a reduction in debt it owes to euro zone governments in a few years if it diligently implements all the agreed reforms. The European Commission backs that view.

German paper Welt am Sonntag said on Sunday that euro zone ministers were considering a write-down of official loans for Greece from 2015, but gave no sources and a euro zone official said such an option was never seriously discussed.

European Central Bank executive board member Joerg Asmussen told the German Bild paper on Sunday that a write-down on Greek debt should not be part of the deal, echoing repeated statements from German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble who said it would be illegal.

"It will be touch-and-go if we get a deal on Greece on Monday," a senior euro zone official said. "Euro zone countries have made concessions worth a lot of money already, so it is difficult to see how this can move even further."

French Finance Minister Pierre Moscovici said on Sunday evening that euro zone ministers made big progress to reach a common position during at a conference call on Saturday in preparation for their talks with the IMF on Monday.

"I will go with a firm determination, with a mandate from the president and prime minister, to reach a conclusion," Moscovici said. "We are very close to a solution."

Moscovici mentioned the reduction of interest on bilateral loans, foregoing ECB profits on Greek bonds and the debt buy-back as the options that would need to be applied for a deal as well as additional financing for Athens to keep it funded until 2016, rather than only until 2014.

How to go about advertising my online business? | newsp.com

I have an online business at this website: http://truhost.dyndns.org

I have a facebook page for it and the website. There has been very little traffic to it, according to google analytics. I figured one of the problems might be the lack of a domain name. Other than that, why do I have low traffic and no customers yet? Are the prices to high? Should I change the name to something a bit more unique? And what else can I do to advertise?

I think you still need a lot of work in terms of search engine optimization ? your title tags are weak, the first 75% of your above the fold screen tells you nothing about what you do

Here are some shoestring marketing ideas that can help you get the visitors you need at the least cost possible:

1. Create the best content you can with the best products you can possibly offer. Your content is your best advertisement ? if visitors love your content, then they will go back and spread the word to others.

2. Use social media. Twitter, Facebook, Stumbleupon, LinkedIn, Reddit, Digg and others can be a big source of traffic for your business. Make it easy for users to recommend your site. Viral marketing is very important ? and easy to tap on the Web. But give your users the tools.

AddThis http://www.addthis.com

3. Rank well in the search engines (organic search results, not the pay per click). SEs can be a big source of traffic. The key is to create the best content in your niche. If you have good content, other websites will gladly link to you and offer your site as a resource to their audience. Check the on-page factors and be sure to get linked from authority sites in your topic area.

Brett Tabke of WebmasterWorld.com?s "Successful Site in 12 Months with Google Alone: 26 steps to 15k a day." http://www.webmasterworld.com/forum3/2010.htm

4. Send out press releases. While outfits charge as much as $650 per release, there are free press release submission places on the Web. Press releases allow you to (a) attract media attention; (b) get more back links to your website without sending each website an email request; and (c) get more visibility especially if your press release gets in Google News or Yahoo News.

5. Submit articles. Write articles and submit them to websites accepting author submissions. You get exposure for your business; establishes you as an authority in your field, and allows you to get backlinks for your website. If 50 websites publish your article and it contains a link back to your website, then you easily get 50 links from a single article. The more links you have, the greater your chances for increasing your search engine rankings.

Here is a comprehensive list of where to submit your articles http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=1006022407481

6. Post a link to your site for free where it is allowed (always read the Terms of Use). Examples are:

Working Smarter | Connect Your Meetings

As I write this, I?m 800 miles from home, trying to write a blog about work-life balance. Fitting, since I?m on the last day of my Thanksgiving vacation, but I?m squeezing in a little work. In the past week, I?ve met a magazine deadline, taken my daughter to the doctor, flown to visit family, planned a baby shower for my sister, visited with dozens of friends and family, and answered emails for work while doing all of the aforementioned. In the next two weeks, I?ll meet another magazine deadline, fly out of town for a wedding, schedule another doctor?s appointment, decorate our house for the holidays, do a little Christmas shopping, and the list goes on.?Sound?familiar?

I?m sure it does.?Professionals in the meetings and events industry know all too well the pressures that come with?trying to balance work and life. It?s a topic we explored in the last issue of Connect. We talked with people who?are working to find an equilibrium and balance all their demands, and though it?s not easy, they all shared ways they?re making it work. Technology is certainly?making long?trips for site visits easier,?allowing parents to?Skype?or FaceTime with their families at home. Employers are responding to their employees, too, introducing more?flexible work schedules. People also rely on their friends, family and?personal networks to?help when they need it most.

I?ve learned a lot since we brought our first child home 16 months ago, but one of the biggest lessons I?ve learned is that whatever I?m working on, I need to make it worth?it. If I?m going to be spending eight hours away from my daughter during the day, I need to be devoted to that work. And when I leave work for the day, I need to make sure I spend worthwhile time with my daughter, Rowan. My husband says it?s not about working harder now that we have a child; it?s about working smarter. And I agree with that.

What?s one lesson you?ve learned about balancing your work and personal life?

Rolling Stones return to mark 50 years in music

LONDON (Reuters) - The Rolling Stones take to the stage later on Sunday after a five-year hiatus to celebrate the golden jubilee of one of the most successful and enduring bands in rock and roll history.

Now in their mid-60s to early 70s, lead singer Mick Jagger, guitarists Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood and drummer Charlie Watts will perform five concerts - two at the O2 Arena in London on November 25 and 29 and three in the United States next month.

Joining them at the O2 on Sunday will be former band members Bill Wyman and Mick Taylor, the first time the two ex-Stones have performed with the group in more than 20 years.

And in a fresh announcement on Saturday, American R&B singer-songwriter Mary J. Blige and guitar great Jeff Beck have also been added to the lineup as special guests.

The flamboyant veterans behind a string of hits including "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction", "You Can't Always Get What You Want" and "Jumpin' Jack Flash" have promised a "stunning" gig lasting more than two hours.

A sellout crowd of some 20,000 people is expected, in spite of widespread complaints from fans at ticket prices that ranged from 95 pounds ($150) to up to 950 pounds for a VIP seat.

Costs went far higher on secondary ticketing websites, although by Friday eBay was offering several seats to Sunday's show at below face value and there were places still officially available at around 400 pounds apiece.

The band has defended the prices, saying that the shows are expensive to put on, although Billboard, a specialist music publication, reported that the quartet would be paid $25 million for the four shows first announced. A fifth was added later.

BURST OF ACTIVITY

The concerts are the culmination of a busy few months of events, rehearsals and recordings to mark 50 years since the blues-infused rockers first took to the stage at the Marquee Club on London's Oxford Street in July, 1962.

There has been a photo album, two new songs, a music video, a documentary film, a blitz of media appearances and a handful of warm-up gigs in Paris.

The O2 Arena was where another top band of the 1960s and 70s, Led Zeppelin, staged an eagerly awaited one-off reunion in 2007, and while the Stones have appeared together far more regularly, it is their first arena performance in six years.

One factor behind the long break has been Wood's struggle with alcohol addition, according to Rolling Stone magazine, while Jagger and Richards also fell out over comments the guitarist made about the singer in a 2010 autobiography.

"We can't get divorced - we're doing it for the kids!" joked Richards in a recent interview after apologizing to Jagger.

While the rock and roll excesses of the swinging 60s and 70s are in the past for the band, and their very best songs may be behind them, music critics praised their recent single "Doom and Gloom" from the "GRRR!" greatest hits album just released.

And there have been hints from the band that the five gigs which wind up at the Newark Prudential Center on December 15 may not be the end of their reunion.

"Once the juggernaut starts rolling, it ain't gonna stop," Richards told Rolling Stone. "So without sort of saying definitely yes - yeah. We ain't doing all this for four gigs!"

If you appreciate what they do, feel free to donate your spare change to help feed them on the weekends. After selecting the amount you want to donate from the menu, you can continue by clicking on PayPal logo.
