BERLIN (Reuters) - Chancellor candidate Peer Steinbrueck was widely criticized on Sunday, even by his own center-left Social Democrats (SPD), for saying German leaders were underpaid.
Steinbrueck has struggled to gain ground against Chancellor Angela Merkel ahead of next September's election, in part due to lingering criticism over him earning 1.25 million euros ($1.65 million) as an after-dinner speaker in the past three years.
The remarks from the former finance minister about what he called the inadequate compensation for the chancellor drew speedy rebukes across the country's political spectrum, including from the last SPD chancellor Gerhard Schroeder.
"A German chancellor does not earn enough based on the performance that is required of her or him compared with the jobs of others who have far less responsibility and far more pay," Steinbrueck, 65, was quoted on Sunday by the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung newspaper saying.
"Nearly every savings bank director in North Rhine-Westphalia earns more than the chancellor does," Steinbrueck said of his home state.
Merkel's pay is set to rise by 930 euros per month to 17,106 euros in 2013 along with pay rises for her ministers and members of parliament, increases that have been criticized by some for sending the wrong signal in an era of austerity.
"Some of the debates kicked up by the 'guardians of public virtue' are grotesque and are harmful for anyone considering getting involved in politics," Steinbrueck said.
ELECTION
The SPD trails Merkel's conservatives by 10 points in opinion polls, but, with its Greens allies, it does have a chance of winning power in September because of the prolonged weakness of Merkel's Free Democrat (FDP) coalition partners.
Steinbrueck, whose blunt talk makes him popular among some voters despite him never winning a major election and him being defeated as state premier in North Rhine-Westphalia in 2005, said there were times in his career when he was not as well off and admitted he was now a "wealthy Social Democrat".
Schroeder, chancellor from 1998 to 2005, has endorsed Steinbrueck to lead his party against Merkel but distanced himself from Steinbrueck's views on pay.
"In my view politicians in Germany are adequately compensated," Schroeder told Bild am Sonntag newspaper. "I was certainly always able to live off the pay. And anyone who doesn't feel it's enough pay can always look for another job."
Other SPD leaders indirectly criticized Steinbrueck. Dieter Wiefelspuetz, a top SPD member of parliament, said politicians were misguided if they compared their wages to private industry.
"To serve as chancellor is a fascinating job and the pay is definitely not shabby," he said.
Steinbrueck was once seen as the center-left's best hope of winning back the chancellorship. He was popular as the no-nonsense finance minister and the SPD hoped he would siphon centrist voters away from the conservatives.
But the controversy over his earning 1.25 million euros for 89 speeches will not go away and his campaign has been marred by setbacks and awkward comments.
Analysts say he is also struggling to win over female voters, many of whom are put off by his combative style.
"Merkel is popular due to a 'woman's bonus' that she gets," Steinbrueck told the paper.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) is shown in this C-Span video footage as he addresses the Senate??Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell urged Vice President Joe Biden on Sunday to jump into ?fiscal cliff? talks in hopes of breaking an impasse that threatens Americans with sharply higher income taxes come January 1.
In a brief speech on the Senate floor, McConnell complained that Democrats had not yet placed a counter-offer to a new Republican proposal, delivered at 7 pm on Saturday, ?despite the obvious time crunch.?
?I?m concerned about the lack of urgency here,? the Kentucky lawmaker said. ?I think we all know we?re running out of time.?
Besides conferring with his Democratic counterpart, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, McConnell said he had reached out to Biden "to see if he could help jump-start the negotiations on his side.?
McConnell added, ?The vice president and I have worked together on solutions before, and I believe we can again."
Absent a breakthrough by tomorrow, income tax rates will rise across the board while government spending on domestic and defense programs will be slashed ? a combination that some experts warn could plunge the economy into a new recession.
President Barack Obama has pressed for extending Bush-era tax rates on income up to $250,000 but letting them expire above that threshold. Republicans have resisted raising taxes on income at all levels. The two sides have also been at odds on issues like the estate tax and whether to extend unemployment benefits that stand to expire for some two million Americans.
Republican aides said that McConnell and Biden had spoken several times. A Biden aide said the vice president went to the White House after spending Christmas with his family in Delaware.
?We?re willing to work with whoever, whoever can help,? McConnell said. ?There?s no single issue that remains an impossible sticking point. The sticking point appears to be a willingness, an interest, or frankly the courage to close the deal.?
?I?m willing to get this done, but I need a dance partner,? he said.
Reid said he had spoken several times on Sunday with Obama but acknowledged that his side had been ?unable? to present a counter-offer to the latest Republican proposal.
?He and the vice president, I wish them well. In the meantime I will continue to try to come up something but at this stage I don?t have a counter-offer to make,? Reid said. ?We are apart on some pretty big issues.?
Reid said he remained "hopeful but realistic" about the prospects for a breakthrough.
But he also seemed to confirm that one key sticking point was a Republican demand for reducing Social Security payments but adopting a less generous cost-of-living calculation known as ?chained CPI? (the CPI being ?consumer price index,? a measure of inflation).
?We?re not going to have any Social Security cuts,? Reid declared, saying it would not be ?appropriate? in a short-term deal. Democratic leaders have cautiously signaled support for that approach ? but only as part of a larger-scale deal that would see the U.S. debt limit raised for a significant stretch of time. Republicans want to use the debt ceiling fight to wrangle deeper government spending cuts.
?We're willing to make difficult concessions as part of a balanced, comprehensive agreement,? Reid said, ?but we'll not agree to cut Social Security benefits as part of a small or short-term agreement, especially if that agreement gives more handouts to the rich.?
Republican aides bristled at Reid's characterization, noting that Democrats had not yet returned with a counter-offer. "If they don't like the CPI thing, they can strike it out," one told Yahoo News.
Republican senators, meanwhile, emerged from a closed door party meeting saying that chained CPI was off the table for now. The proposal was "not a winning hand" in the current standoff, John McCain told reporters drily.
Republican House Speaker John Boehner has said that it's up to the Senate to craft a compromise that can clear both chambers of Congress. Boehner suffered an embarrassing setback 10 days ago when conservative opposition forced him to withdraw legislation that would have let taxes rise on income of above $1 million. But a senior Republican aide noted that the exercise allowed the speaker to gauge how many of his rank-and-file would accept any increase in tax rates.

The most difficult part of yoga for me is... getting my butt to yoga class. I have no excuses: my yoga studio is literally just around the corner from our home - a three-minute walk from my front porch - and the wonderful teacher is patient, always pushes me just far enough, always reminds me to breathe.?
As usual this morning, I hemmed and hawed, looking for every excuse to not get my butt to the yoga studio. And though I did manage to get my butt over to the studio, as always, I unfurled my yoga mat down with the most unenthusiastic look upon my face and begrudgingly got into lotus pose. ? Ten minutes into the session, as usual, I felt my creaky body stretch back to where it belongs. And by the end of the hour, I felt refreshed, rejuvenated, more energetic, and less like the Tin Man I was when I entered the dimly lit room. I do hot yoga, so I feel like I've sweated out some toxins with a side of negativity. I feel my feet a bit more firmly planted into the ground, and I feel lighter.? I suppose I can consider myself a bicyclist by default, and I'm big on walking, everywhere. What I need more than anything is a lot of stretching. I want to be strong, lean, and limber. ?So for 2013, I am going to make a point of getting my butt out the door and into yoga class, at least twice per week. I will unfurl my yoga mat with a smile knowing that in one hour, I will feel so much better.?

The Superfund cleanup of the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn is expected to cost $467 million to $504 million and will require dredging the 1.8-mile waterway to remove contaminated sediment, the federal Environmental Protection Agency said on Thursday.
The agency, releasing an updated plan for public comment, is also proposing controls to prevent raw sewage discharges by the city, which have been an ongoing source of contamination.
The worst contamination of the Gowanus however, comes from its past as a major industrial transportation route for paper mills, tanneries, chemical plants and other businesses that operated alongside it. The waterway is polluted with more than a dozen contaminants, including PCBs and heavy metals like mercury, lead and copper.
Despite the heavy contamination and government advisories against fishing, officials say that some residents continue to eat fish from the canal.
?The proposed cleanup plan for the Gowanus Canal will make essential progress in removing toxic contaminants from this heavily polluted and battered waterway,?? Judith A. Enck, the E.P.A.?s? regional administrator in New York, said in a statement. ?Our overall goal is to reduce pollution and protect the health of people who live and work in this community.?
In a phone interview, Ms. Enck said she expected the plan to be finalized by the end of next year. The design phase will then take about two years, and the cleanup itself will take until 2020, agency officials said.
?This is an area where millions of people live, and we?re going to work with the community so this is the least disruptive as possible, especially to local businesses,? Ms. Enck said.
Among the parties helping to pay for the cleanup are the city and other entities associated with the pollution of its waters, including National Grid, formerly the Brooklyn Union Gas company.
The Gowanus was added to the federal Superfund list in 2010 over the objections of the Bloomberg administration, which feared that the designation would deter development and had proposed a streamlined cleanup that it would help oversee. City officials have also clashed with the EPA over how to address the sewage overflow issue, given the costs the city would incur in seeking to address it.
But on Thursday, the city?s Department of Environmental Protection, which handles sewage treatment, said in a statement: ?We look forward to carefully reviewing the details of E.P.A.?s proposal and working with our state and federal partners to improve water quality and support the cleanup of the canal.?
The E.P.A.?s plan involves dividing the canal into three segments. For the first two, more heavily contaminated segments, the agency plans to dredge or ?stabilize? the sediment in some areas by mixing it with concrete or a similar material and then capping it with layers of clay, sand and gravel.
The third segment would be dredged and capped with sand, the agency said.
To prevent recontamination after the cleanup is completed, federal officials are also proposing installing controls at two major city outfall sites that discharge sewer overflows into the canal. The controls ? basically, holding tanks that would retain excess sewage and stormwater until the city?s treatment plants can handle it ? could reduce discharges of raw sewage by
58 percent to 74 percent, the agency said.
Two public meetings on the cleanup plan are scheduled, on Jan. 23 and 24, and the E.P.A. is accepting public comments until March 28. Written comments on the proposed plan should be addressed to:

The concept of getting a plastic cosmetic surgery is exciting because everybody wants to enjoy a youthful appearance and slimmer physique. Nonetheless, there is no assurance that this specific surgical procedure will offer 100 percent good results. You must be evaluated if plastic surgical treatment is suitable for you. Asking your doctors some questions will also assist you understand the likelihood of getting your needed outcomes. You must know whether or not you are physically fit to have the surgical treatment.1. You should have a healthy body
You can become a great candidate for plastic surgery if you never suffer health concerns like lung or heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, depression, rheumatoid arthritis or bleeding issues. These types of diseases will increase the chances of problems associated with infection, anesthesia, skin loss or blood loss. All surgical procedures are predicted to have natural hazards; nevertheless, if you are suffering from medical concerns you are more likely to experience issues.
2. You must be in your great health or near to it
When you undergo surgical treatment while you are obese, you may have loose skin after the process. This can cause losing all health benefits which you obtain from the procedure. If you desire to undergo a surgical procedure you must try to keep your best weight and tone up muscles by undertaking a lot of exercises. Furthermore, you will have an overstressed heart when you're overweight which implies that surgery won't be encouraged.
3. You should not be smoking
Smoking any types of tobacco will likely cause problems during a plastic surgery. If you are planning to undergo this treatment you should quit smoking at least a few weeks before your operation and stay smoke-free until at least a couple weeks following the surgery so that you could easily heal and recover. Individuals who smoke have a higher rate of skin break up, infections, anesthesia troubles and skin death. As reported by a survey, active smokers have a 100% likelihood of losing an important part of their skin due to poor supply of oxygen during a facelift. Also, smoking cigarettes reduces blood circulation that is important to fast recovery. It may also cause the lungs to be predisposed to pneumonia and limit your resistance to potential infections.
4. You have to be stable psychologically
With plastic surgical treatment, your whole body is predicted to change and this type of change will demand emotional response from you. Your energy will be exhausted during a surgery predisposing your emotional stability to depression. It is necessary that you have a sound emotional condition to manage your responses and the responses of other people. Individuals will be able to accept and adjust to your changes as time passes. However, you can expect some unpleasant responses from them in the short term. This requires you a good support system.
5. You needs to be backed by your loved ones
In the first fourteen days, you will need the assistance of the people close to you. Again, you should be reminded that you must recover without being anxious. In order for your body to recover, you need relaxation. You need to talk to your loved ones about daily activities and chores. You can ask someone to help you with cleaning or cooking if you really need to do it.
6. Your whole body must not be stocked with a huge amount of caffeinated drinks and alcohol
Alcohol and caffeine are culprits that disrupt the healing and should be avoided if you intend to have breast implants. These types of substances affect the blood flow that's needed to provide healing to cuts. Also, they have an effect on maintaining the quality of the skin; hence, you must take them moderately.
Plastic surgical treatment comes with dangers but the most vital thing is you know whether or not it is perfect for you. You could reduce the dangers by choosing the right doctor, understanding the process, talking to your physician regarding your objectives, coming up with expectations that are realistic and following the instructions of your surgeon carefully.

NRA president David Keene said Thursday that David Gregory should not be prosecuted over the gun magazine he showed on "Meet the Press."
Gregory is currently being investigated by police after he showed what appeared to be a thirty-bullet gun magazine during an interview with NRA's Wayne LaPierre on Sunday. D.C. city code stipulates that it is illegal for anyone to possess, transfer or sell a magazine. It is not known whether NBC News had permission to use the magazine, and the network has not commented on the situation yet.
Keene appeared on CNN on Thursday. When asked if he believed Gregory should be prosecuted, he responded, "No, I don't think so."
He said that Gregory's actions showed that owning a magazine is "a silly felony." He continued, "I really think what David Gregory did while he was inadvertently flouting the law was illustrating in a very graphic way, perhaps not intentionally, but in a graphic way just how silly some of these laws are."
CNN host Carol Costello pressed Keene on whether Gregory should be prosecuted, considering that the law already exists. Keene maintained his position. "I?m not a vindictive guy who wants to go after David Gregory," he said. "I think it illustrates the craziness of some of these laws."

In addition to a number of armed conflicts taking place around the globe, an ongoing battle against child obesity is being waged in the US. A new study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) published on December 25 in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) reported that we have made some progress in the war against child obesity; however, child obesity is still of epidemic proportions. A study published on December 24 in the journal Pediatrics has unearthed another weapon that may aid in this obesity battle. Researchers affiliated with the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (Dallas, Texas) and the Children?s Medical Center (Dallas, Texas) reported a strong association between child obesity and Vitamin D deficiency.
The Texas researchers noted that adequate Vitamin D is essential for skeletal health in developing children. They explained that excess body weight is associated with risk of Vitamin D deficiency; however, the national prevalence of and risk factors associated with vitamin D deficiency in overweight and obese children are unknown. Therefore, they designed a study to determine the prevalence of Vitamin D deficiency (defined as a 25-hydroxyvitamin-D level of less than 20 ng/mL) in a sample of 6- to 18-year-old children. The children were enrolled in a cross-sectional study (the 2003?2006 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey) in which body weight and height were measured directly. The children were classified as healthy-weight, overweight, obese, or severely obese by using recommended age- and gender-specific BMI-percentile cutoff points. Associations between BMI-percentile classification and Vitamin D deficiency were examined after adjustment for relevant confounders. Sample weights were used to generate nationally representative estimates.
The researchers found that the prevalence of Vitamin D deficiency for the different groups were: healthy-weight (21%); overweight (29%); obese (34%); and severely obese (49%). They also found racial differences. The prevalence of Vitamin D deficiency in severely obese Caucasian children was 27%; the prevalence was 52% for Latino children; and the prevalence for African American children was 87%. Compared with healthy-weight children, overweight, obese, and severely obese children had significantly greater adjusted odds of vitamin D deficiency. Modifiable factors associated with vitamin D deficiency in overweight/obese children were identified.
The researchers concluded that Vitamin D deficiency is highly prevalent in overweight and obese children. They noted that the particularly high prevalence in severely obese and minority children suggests that targeted screening and treatment guidance is needed.
The CDC noted that low-income preschoolers are known to be at higher risk of obesity than their more affluent peers, in part because access to healthy food is often limited in poorer neighborhoods. The agency?s new study found that the number of these children who qualify as obese or extremely obese has decreased over the last decade.. However, the researchers cautioned that the decline was only modest and may not apply to all children. Despite that, the researchers noted that the findings were encouraging because the new findings are the first national data to show obesity and extreme obesity may be declining in young children
The investigators reviewed data on routine clinic visits for about half of all US children eligible for federal nutrition programs, including 27.5 million children between age two and four. They found that 13% of those preschoolers were obese in 1998. That rose to just above 15% in 2003, but dropped slightly below 15% in 2010, the most recent study year included. Similarly, the prevalence of extreme obesity increased from nearly 1.8% in 1998 to 2.2% in 2003, then fell to just below 2.1% percent in 2010.
The CDC noted some reasons for the decrease in child obesity. Between 2003 and 2010, an increase in breastfeeding of low-income infants occurred. Breastfeeding has been linked to a healthier weight in early childhood. In addition, states and communities have started working with child care centers to ensure that children have time to run around and that healthy foods are on the lunch menu, she added. The CDC researchers noted that parents can encourage better eating by having fruits and vegetables available at snack time and allowing their young children to help with meal preparation. Other recommendations include making sure preschoolers get at least one hour of activity every day and keeping television sets out of the bedroom.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A strong Christmas-day box office performance by musical "Les Miserables" and western "Django Unchained" put Hollywood on pace to set an all-time box office record with $10.8 billion in annual revenue, box-office tracker Hollywood.com said on Wednesday.
Universal Pictures' star-studded "Les Miserables" took in a weekday Christmas record of $18.2 million in the United States and Canada when it opened on Tuesday, according to studio estimates of weekday ticket sales.
Quentin Tarantino's spaghetti western "Django Unchained," starring Jamie Foxx and Leonardo DiCaprio, hauled nearly $15 million for The Weinstein Co.
Studios "are definitely on the road to a record year with $10.8 billion expected (up 6 percent over last year and beating the previous record of $10.6 billion in 2009)," Hollywood.com analyst Paul Dergarabedian told Reuters in an email, adding that the number of tickets sold should climb 6 percent from 2011 to 1.36 billion.
Dergarabedian credits a successful marketing year for studios as a chief reason for the projected box-office record, as well as spring and summer smashes "The Hunger Games" and "The Avengers" helping boost revenue.
"It was not just the fact that most of the movies delivered, it was the timing of their release dates and the marketing was obviously effective as well with social media continuing to provide an outlet for the movie-going peer group to talk about their favorite flicks," Dergarabedian said.
"The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey," based on the J.R.R. Tolkein classic fantasy novel, brought in $11.4 million on Christmas day after ruling the box office with nearly $37 million in sales over the weekend.
Billy Crystal family film "Parental Guidance" debuted in fourth place with about $6.4 million in Christmas sales while Tom Cruise's "Jack Reacher," which featured author Lee Child's character in an investigation into a sniper shooting, was fifth with some $5.3 million.
"The Hobbit" was distributed by Time Warner Inc's Warner Bros. Studio. News Corp's 20th Century Fox released "Parental Guidance" and Paramount Pictures, a unit of Viacom, released "Jack Reacher." Universal Pictures is owned by Comcast Corp.

As LG announced on Wednesday, the new projector system uses lasers and a Texas Instruments DLP chip to form images. Typical home front projectors require around a 9 to 12 foot distance from the lens to a 100-inch screen. The LG HECTO requires only a 22-inch throw to fill the screen and can be placed on the floor or the mounted to the ceiling.
The LG HECTO Laser Projection TV will be sold as a complete system with a 100-Inch diagonal screen, a built-in ATSC TV tuner, HDMI switching and a Wi-Fi connection for streaming video.
Specifications include a rated 1,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, 1080p resolution, 3 HDMI inputs, an optical audio input, RS-232 interface. Audio is produced by two 10W built-in speakers. The projector measures 5.7-inches high. The HECTO Laser projector does not have 3-D capability. LG has not? provided a brightness rating, a key specification. (Lasers offer the promise of very high intensity using low power.)
The screen is a fixed design and unlike theater screens its surface is black not white. LG claims the system will render a vivid, high contrast crisp image, even in lighter viewing environments.
The Laser TV supports LG's Smart TV platform and will stream movies via Netflix?and?YouTube as well as other services and?apps via its built-in Wi-Fi wireless Internet connection. The HECTO also includes LG's latest Magic Remote control.
LG claims its laser based illumination system has a lifespan of up to 25,000 hours, which is 5 times or more the life of traditional mercury-based lamps.
The LG HECTO Laser projector will be demonstrated at the 2013 International Consumer Electronics Show early next month. We expect pricing and availability to be announced at the show.

In this article from the Winter 2013 edition of Recreation Family Fun Guide, contributor Maureen Wilson explores one of the fastest growing youth sports in the nation - archery! Find out why it's also one of the safest youth sports, then sign up at two locations.
--------------
I know you?ve seen it. Everyone has?well at least every teenager in America has. Arrows, bows, and kids with cool leather quivers are showing up everywhere! The youth of America have targeted archery, making it one of the fastest growing sports in the nation. Archery has been around since sports where about surviving, and not just competition. Now, a new set of movies highlighting the sport, from Hunger Games to Brave, have brought archery back in into the forefront of athletics.
Roanoke County public schools are among the many localities that have been including archery as part of their athletic curriculum, thanks to a nationwide effort to promote the sport. The National Archery in the Schools Program (N.A.S.P.) setup an initiative about 10 years ago to promote, train, and encourage youth to pick up a bow. Today, more than two-million students nationwide will experience archery in gym class, and judging by its popularity among students, they?ve really hit the mark!
Bob Shelton has taught archery in Roanoke County public schools for the past 6 years. He says that the sport attracts a wide range of kids and is among the safest sports taught in physical education classes, surpassing even table tennis! ?We teach the kids to be responsible, careful, respectful of equipment and procedures. If you can follow the steps to archery, you can follow the steps to almost any kind of work. Even better, it gives them a chance to have success without it being a matter of strength. Boys and girls are evenly matched, and often girls do better than boys.?
It?s not just a gym class trend either. Archery offers kids who might not excel in more traditional sports a chance to shine and perform. These kids don?t have to be fast runners, or outstanding athletes. Youth who don?t like or are not interested in traditional ball and bat sports can get together with other kids just like them and have fun!
Archery is a unique sport that is particularly good at promoting self confidence among youth. Why? When you shoot an arrow, your competing against your personal best, rather than a direct competition with your peers. You?re trying to better yourself. Lisa Sink, a Roanoke County Archery Instructor, wants parents and youth to know that there are no real physical boundaries with this sport. ?It doesn?t matter if you?re male or female, in a wheel chair, or even deaf. I?ve taught every kind of student there is and it still works out the same. The kids love it. Some of them even end up asking their parents for bows for Christmas.?
Archery provides a chance for your child to really grow in areas where they may be lacking due to not being involved in sports or athletics. Instructors and parents are happy to see kids develop strong Hand/Eye coordination and motor skills. Archery also tends to help kids with attention disorders focus and can help build upper body strength in all kids, especially children with special needs. Overall, it can really be a great avenue for your child to take part in sports without having the athletic background.
Archery isn?t just for hunting anymore. It?s a lifelong sport that can be a great option for a child who is not interested in traditional sports. To excel at archery you need to learn patience, focus and perseverance. Archers are independent, and target shooting gives immediate feedback ? either you hit the target or you didn?t. There?s no need to wait around to hear from the coach. Archery can be a great hobby and, if there?s an interest, can also be used for hunting. There are special hunting seasons reserved just for bow hunters.
Want to know more? Roanoke County now offers a series of weekend classes for beginner level youth, designed to take that next step past gym class instruction. N.A.S.P. has competitions locally, nationally and internationally so the possibilities are endless. Get your kids signed up today! Courses are held on Sunday afternoons at both Brambleton and Green Ridge Recreation Centers.

Lake Placid's National Sports Academy is dealing with a tough financial outlook. (Adirondack Daily Enterprise photo -- Lou Reuter)
Lake Placid, NY, Dec 20, 2012 ? Leaders at Lake Placid's National Sports Academy say an outpouring of community support is helping the private school weather a financial storm.Eighteen Winter Olympians have attended NSA, and hundreds of the school's alumni have competed in World Cup and Division I sports including cross-country and downhill skiing, hockey and luge. Some of the school's most famous alumni include three who competed in the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver: Vermontville native Bill Demong, who won gold and silver medals in Nordic combined; biathlete Haley Johnson of Lake Placid; and luger Chris Mazdzer of Saranac Lake.
In a recent letter to parents, the chairman of NSA?s Board of Trustees wrote that the school is facing some serious financial challenges.
School officials declined to go on tape for this story, but did agree to share portions of the letter. Board Chairman David Van Arnam wrote that the tough economy has led to most of the school?s fiscal troubles.
Van Arnam said decreased enrollment, increased financial aid and debt service have all contributed to the problem.
Var Arnam said, ?The board has worked closely with the administrative team to reach out to community leaders, our banks, and supporters of the school. With this support, we seek to ensure the continuation of the school year.?
Officials said the school is designing a financial plan for the rest of the school year, and a sound business plan for the 2013-14 academic year.
The school?s director of development, Angela Price, said in an email that NSA has launched a ?special end-of-year appeal? that resulted in an ?outpouring of support? from parents and community leaders.
She said NSA is also pursuing grants and loans to keep the school solvent.
The school?s co-founder and longtime headmaster, David Wenn, retired in the spring. His replacement, Jeff Beedy, resigned earlier this month. A team of senior administrators will fill in until an interim headmaster can be appointed.
NSA started out as a winter tutorial program for alpine skiers in 1977. It later morphed into a 10-month program, with students studying at local public schools, and in 1984 it began awarding its own diplomas.
It was originally called Mountain House School; the named changed to National Sports Academy in 1989.
NSA currently enrolls 62 students.

The Ethics Sage Calls for H1-B Visa Reform
Limitations on H1-B Visas Harm Economic Growth in the U.S. ? Ethics Sage
Life in immigration limbo is awful. Immigrants on H1-B visas, which are issued to workers, must be sponsored by a specific employer. This visa can be used to employ a skilled foreign national for up to six years. They cannot change jobs without jeopardizing their application. Their careers stagnate. They do not know whether they will be deported, so they hesitate to put down roots, buy a house or start a company. Sometimes their spouses are barred from working. More and more immigrants look for alternatives and places such Canada, Australia and Singapore are ready to welcome them with open by handing out visas swiftly and without hassle.
Limitations on H1-B Visas Harm Economic Growth in the U.S. ? Ethics Sage
Steven Mintz, better known as the Ethics Sage see problems in the way America?s Visa program for professionals and entrepreneurs works. He believes in the need for H1-B Visa Reform. Obviously, an article thoroughly grounded on facts, often unpleasant deserves attention and action.

Other comments from the Web:
Here?s one from a web site simply entitled H1-B:
I decided to interview a fellow international friend of mine, who graduated from American University in May. In the short interview she describes the difficulty of finding a employment due to her international status and its links with the H1-B program. It?s just one example of thousands of how difficult it is for recent graduates to find jobs. This interview also brings to light the necessity of colleges and universities better training its international students on immigration policy. While I know immigration policy is one we have to run after, it would be interesting to have more seminars on campus about the transition of student to employment authorization status to H1-B status. The more recent graduates can learn about the H1-B process prior to graduating, the better off they are in their job search process.
From the web site, Immigration Services and Forms Blog:
Two weeks back, the quota for H1-B Visas ran out within just 10 weeks of time after it was opened on April 1st. In year 2010 quota was completed in Jan 2011, and in 2011 cap was filled in Nov 2011. First every quota was established in year 1990. This is good news for immigrants and the employers who are petitioning because of the improving job market. Bad news for the US citizens, they want skilled immigrants to stay competitive in the market.
Most of them still think H1-B workers take US jobs, but this isn?t the case. Hiring of these skilled workers doesn?t come at very less cost, government and legal fee runs in thousands of dollars. Fee of $ 1,500 must be paid by US Companies for each H1-B petition for training and scholarship fee. So for a year 65,000 visas, it comes up to $2 billion according to NFAP. This amount is used for more than 53,000 scholarships for students, several programs for 190,000 students and 6,800 school teachers and train up to for more than 55,000 US workers.
From the web site, Definitely Filipino: (I went a little lengthy on my quote. The author has so much interesting to say. JP)
Let?s just say their chances depend on the basis of qualification alone, how sure are we that human resource/personnel departments do not adjust their preferences, in favor of co-Americans to subscribe first, to the Obama Act and second, to the American nationalism?
If this is the case, why give H1B visas intended for foreign nationals, if there are no U.S. companies/institutions ready to provide sponsorship at all? False hopes or merely a part of U.S. recovery efforts? By the latter means the government admits its failure to achieve an acceptable standard, in terms of economics. To date, there are still no instructions that temporarily prohibit the provision of H1B, so we expect more casualties coming for the next quarters.
Critics including H1B holders themselves are saying that Obama?s resolution on the matter directly contradicts the provisions of the Equal Employment Opportunity and the United State?s principal role in advocating globalization, which means being in subscription to the free market of labor and workers. (H1B Visa and Employment, published September 21, 2010)
The agony and hopelessness that foreign visa holders experience will definitely strengthen their cores. But more than anything else, this clearly shows a piece of evidence that America is suffering from many different insecurities, a direct contradiction to its superpower facade.
For H4 visa holders, we shall say, analyzing their situation is like looking at a glass, half-full or half-empty.

From Kerri Richardson, Commonwealth of Kentucky, Office of the Governor
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Dec. 18, 2012) ? Governor Steve Beshear today joined company and local officials in Louisville to announce that two companies, Indatus and Mocura, both under the ownership of ICIM Corporation, plan to establish headquarters on 118 East Main Street in Louisville. Indatus and Mocura will create 100 new jobs and establish a tier-2 datacenter with full network operations center and staff in the renovated historic building.
?This is a great day for the Commonwealth, with 100 new jobs and the headquarters for two companies locating here in Louisville,? said Gov. Beshear. ?We welcome Indatus and Mocura as new corporate citizens in Kentucky, and we realize just how significant headquarters are for our economy, bringing not only top-level jobs, but proven leaders and innovators to our communities.?
The property, at 118 E. Main Street, is registered as a historic building for art deco design in Kentucky.? It was also the original headquarters of Four Roses Bourbon, home to the Miller Paper Company, and, most recently, Bridges and Smith Paint Company. Renovation of the historic site, touted as the ?Gateway to Whisky Row? is estimated to be completed by late December 2013. The project also includes the refurbishing of 9,000 square feet on the first floor available for lease to a retail or restaurant space, as well as renovating 9,000 square feet of basement space.
Indatus is a 22-year-old, privately-held company, with products that have been in the ?cloud? (running at least partially over the internet on a remote server accessed by the user with a browser) for more than 10 years. These products and services are leading the way in cloud-based technologies, software and communications systems. Indatus has more than 8,000 customers across North America, varying from small businesses to global Fortune100 companies.
Mocura is an 18-month-old sister company to Indatus, which covers three areas of products and services that are solely focused on enterprise-level apps and data gathering.? The company?s market-ready mobile applications, custom-developed mobile applications and mobile device management tools utilize existing SaaS cloud architecture to manage data. Mocura grew more than 1,000 percent in the last 12 months and is quickly becoming a major player in the rapidly changing mobile business process arena.
?This project is such a great example of what happens when motivated government agencies and institutions work together with common purpose,? said Dave Durik, CEO of Indatus. ?We are just extremely excited and honored to be the recipient of the attention.?
?This is exciting for Louisville and the Commonwealth of Kentucky because of the new jobs that will be created through this investment in our city and our state,? said Sen. Gerald Neal, of Louisville. ?Along with new jobs, our city will also reap the benefits from economic growth and development. I applaud Gov. Beshear for taking the lead to support this industry, their employees and their families.?
?Louisville has established a great reputation when it comes to creating and luring technological companies, and Indatus? and Mocura?s move to Kentucky is further proof of the gains our community has made,? said Rep. Darryl Owens, of Louisville. ?This is great news, and it speaks volumes about all that we have to offer. I also want to thank our local and state officials for helping to make this happen.?
?It?s great when Louisville and a company both benefit by moving its operations to Louisville and creating new jobs,? said Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer. ?It?s even better when they decide to completely renovate and modernize an older building, augmenting our sustainability practices. Indatus and Mocura both will be meeting business technology demands in Louisville and around the country, and we look forward to working with them.?
?The addition of Indatus and Mocura to the East Main Street corridor adds to the increasing density of technology firms in the NuLu, East Main, Nucleus area,? said Eileen Pickett, vice president of economic development for Greater Louisville Inc. ?We are thrilled to see this growth and the evolution of the historically booming bourbon district becoming home to the latest innovations in technology.??

So, you are finally ready to try Website marketing for yourself. Isn?t that an exciting idea? At the same time, you may be feeling overwhelmed by the volume of information you must analyze and process to begin. However, you have come to the right place for internet marketing advice. Some of the tips you need to get organized to be a successful marketer on the Internet are listed below.
Give something away. You could for instance let people download an e-book or watch a video related to the products or services they are interested in. For example, if you are a general contractor, you might have a good article of home repair tips for your customers to download. This tells customers that you care about what is important to them.
Title your products as ?limited? in advertising. A lot of people do their shopping online because their stores don?t offer the variety that they can find on the Internet. Your customers are looking for something meaningful and different from the regular old products that are easy to find and commonly bought. When the item is limited, people want to get it before it finishes.
TIP! It is important that you handle all customer service complaints on your own. Hiring others to deal with complaints can be tempting, but they?re always best handled internally.
Receiving and sustaining your customer?s trust is imperative. As you develop your marketing plan, you should only consider facts and statistics that are easily proven and valid. Use testimonials, expert endorsements, and results on your site to promote your products.
Nearly every cell phone company will permit you to have an additional dedicated work number on your phone. Get a number specifically for your business.
If you want to build trust and to sell products, you need to offer a warranty or some type of guarantee. This provides your company with credibility and your customers with confidence. When you give reassurance to your customers, they will be that much more likely to give you business.
TIP! Having a user-friendly 500 error page is a very helpful tool. When this page appears, some of the code has stopped working.
Email marketing is an important, beneficial tool. Your ideas should be well guarded. Try to use a service that saves all of your old emails so that you can keep dialogues with your customers. Think about making e-mail archive arrangements of your own, this is even more important if you have sensitive communication e-mails with customers or consultants.
To attract more customers to your site, create a game. Visitors like to play free online games, and usually this will draw a lot of people to your site where they hopefully keep coming back. Try to carefully and subtly incorporate advertising of your products within the game design. This gives you an opportunity to promote your products in a subtle way.
Assess the overall effectiveness of your online marketing efforts by using tech tools to measure the conversion of site visitors to paying customers. Most companies have add-ons and tools that will help you track all of your activity.
TIP! If you are interested in having a trusted site, write a FAQ. This gives quick answers to most questions pertaining to your site and business, while simplifying the process of your customers getting the help they are looking for.
Video marketing is an excellent way to get the word out about your business and really get noticed. Adding a video to your website or blog is the best way to attract and hold a customer?s interest in your product. An interesting title and a unique picture will grab the attention of potential clients and possibly produce sales.
Internet marketers that are successful show a sense of enthusiasm about their products and radiate positivity about their company. Enthusiasm of your product is essential to the success of your business. If you are believable, you will get them as excited as you are. Enthusiastic customers are likely to be paying customers.
When you are developing your website, fill it with content that is comprehensive and highly relevant. Your chief focus must be to instill knowledge in your customer base in a short period of time, so they know what they are purchasing. Don?t be wordy about your product descriptions. Get down to business and focus on what is absolutely necessary for the customer to know to make a gooe judgement call on whether or not they want to buy your product.
TIP! Use a variety of marketing techniques when you are first beginning to build your business to discover which methods work best for your company. You can impart information regarding promotions and services to your customers via phone, email and fax.
A smart tip for Website marketing is adjusting your content and delivering it in a way that your customers always feel they are controlling what happens. This is essential to today?s online world of unwanted opinions and spam. Always make it easy to allow customers to opt out of emails so that they don?t feel bombarded or stuck with no easy way out.
The advice above will give you some Web marketing confidence to get started today. There was quite a bit of information there, but you will now have the ability to begin your Internet marketing campaign correctly. Print out this article so you can refresh yourself, when necessary, about the proper steps to take.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Fiscal cliff talks at a partisan standoff, President Barack Obama and House Speaker John Boehner swapped barbed political charges on Wednesday yet carefully left room for further negotiations on an elusive deal to head off year-end tax increases and spending cuts that threaten the national economy.
Republicans should "peel off the war paint" and take the deal he's offering, Obama said sharply at the White House. He buttressed his case by noting he had won re-election with a call for higher taxes on the wealthy, then he said pointedly that the nation aches for conciliation, not a contest of ideologies, after last week's mass murder at a Connecticut elementary school.
But he drew a quick retort from Boehner when the White House threatened to veto a fallback bill drafted by House Republicans that would prevent tax increases for all but million-dollar earners. The president will bear responsibility for "the largest tax increase in history" if he makes good on that threat, the Ohio Republican declared.
In fact, it's unlikely the legislation will get that far as divided government careens into the final few days of a struggle that affects the pocketbooks of millions and blends lasting policy differences with deep political mistrust.
Boehner expressed confidence the Republicans' narrow so-called Plan B bill would clear the House on Thursday despite opposition from some conservative, anti-tax dissidents, but a cold reception awaits in the Democratic-controlled Senate.
As for a broader agreement, officials said there had been little if any progress toward closing the gap between the two sides in the past two days, even though aides to the president and Boehner have remained in contact.
On paper, the two sides are relatively close to an agreement on major issues, each having offered concessions in an intensive round of talks that began late last week.
But political considerations are substantial, particularly for Republicans.
After two decades of resolutely opposing any tax increases, Boehner is seeking votes from fellow Republicans for legislation that tacitly lets rates rise on million-dollar income tax filers. Similarly, despite vehement protests that the looming across-the-board spending cuts would seriously affect the Pentagon, the leadership's fallback bill does nothing to blunt or eliminate the reductions scheduled to begin on Jan. 1
Boehner won a letter of support from anti-tax activist Grover Norquist during the day. Norquist's organization, Americans For Tax Reform, issued a statement saying it will not consider a vote for the bill a violation of a no-tax-increase pledge that many Republicans have signed.
But another conservative group came to an opposing conclusion. "Allowing a tax increase to hit a certain segment of Americans and small businesses is not a solution; it is a political ploy," said the Heritage Foundation said in a statement.
As for the scheduled defense cuts, Rep. C.W. (Bill) Young of Florida, who heads the House panel with jurisdiction over the Pentagon's budget, said he is undecided how to vote on the legislation.
"This is not a game. This is real because so much of the sequester (spending cuts) would be defense ? half of it," he said. "I just don't think it's workable."
Rep. Tom Rooney of Florida, a member of the Armed Services Committee, said he will vote for the legislation even if it leaves the defense cuts in place. He said if he didn't vote for a bill that prevents a tax increase for 99 percent of people "I'm not doing my job."
That appeared to be the hope of Boehner and the rest of the leadership, that by showing his rank and file is united behind the fallback bill, the speaker would be in a strong position to demand concessions from the White House in the broader endgame.
Democrats had their own issues, but so far, they have remained largely submerged as Republicans struggle.
Reps. Peter DeFazio of Oregon and Jim McDermott of Washington, both veteran liberals, announced their opposition to a provision that Obama is backing to slow the growth of cost-of-living benefits for Social Security and other benefit programs.
At the White House, Obama repeated that he is ready to agree to spending cuts that may cause distress among some fellow Democrats, but he saved his sharpest words for Republicans.
"Goodness, if this past week has done anything, it should just give us some perspective," he said in a reference to the shootings of school children in Connecticut.
Yet even as he implored Republicans to "take the deal," he made it clear he's open to more bargaining.
Asked whether he might be flexible on the level at which tax rates should rise, he said he wasn't going to bargain in public. He also addressed the issue of politics.
Speaking of Republicans, he said, "It is very hard for them to say yes to me. But at some point, they've got to take me out of it."
He added, "I'm often reminded when I speak to the Republican leadership that the majority of their caucus' membership come from districts that I lost. And so sometimes they may not see an incentive in cooperating with me, in part because they're more concerned about challenges from a tea party candidate, or challenges from the right, and cooperating with me may make them vulnerable."
Nor did Boehner slam the door on further compromises in his brief appearance before reporters. "Republicans continue to work toward avoiding the fiscal cliff," he said.
In the talks to date, Obama is now seeking $1.2 trillion in higher tax revenue, down from the $1.6 trillion he initially sought. He also has softened his demand for higher tax rates on household incomes so they would apply to incomes over $400,000 instead of the $250,000 he cited during his successful campaign for a new term.
He also has offered more than $800 billion in spending cuts over a decade, half of it from Medicare and Medicaid, $200 million farm and other benefit programs, $100 billion from defense and $100 billion from a broad swath of government accounts ranging from parks to transportation and education.
In a key concession to Republicans, the president also has agreed to slow the rise in cost-of-living-increases in Social Security and other benefit programs, at a savings estimated at about $130 billion over a decade.
By contrast, Boehner's most recent offer allowed for $1 trillion in higher taxes over a decade, with higher rates for annual incomes over $1 million. He's also seeking about $1 trillion in spending cuts.
The two sides disagree, too, over increases in the government's debt limit, which will soon need to be raised when borrowing reaches the current $16.4 trillion cap.
Also at issue are unemployment benefits, which are scheduled to expire for an estimated 2 million out-of-work Americans at year's end, and the prospect of reduced payments beginning Jan. 1 for doctors who care for Medicare patients.

Soman said that he intended to make the event an annual one spread across 10 major cities, in order to spread awareness about early action against the disease.
"In ordinary runs, male participation is very high, because of which women sometimes feel uncomfortable. So, it is very important to promote women's running. It is breast cancer awareness, because breast cancer is a disease which we do not understand, but if detected early it is completely curable," said Saman.
He added that the success of the initial plan would be followed by an attempt to spread further awareness in smaller towns and villages.
"Apart from us, there are many non-governmental organisations which are doing this work. Eventually we will move to villages as well," he said.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), about 14 lakh new cases are being diagnosed each year and more than 450,000 women are dying annually of the breast cancer.

The Pentax Q10 ($599.95 direct with 5-15mm lens) is the company's second attempt at making a petite camera with interchangeable lenses. Its first, the Q, had a lot of charm, but suffered from some performance issues, and was a tough sell at a steep $800. The Q10 is physically identical to its predecessor?although it ships with a different bundled lens?and is offered at a lower price point. It's a cute camera, and performs slightly better than the Q, but in the year-long interval since the Q's release other manufacturers have outpaced the improvements that the Q10 offers. It may appeal to a certain type of shooter, but it's not a camera we can recommend over excellent competitors like the Olympus PEN Mini E-PM2 and our Editors' Choice Sony Alpha NEX-F3, which are available for the same price.
Design and Features
The Q10 measures 2.3 by 4.0 by 1.3 inches (HWD), making it the smallest interchangeable lens camera on the market. It's light at 6.4 ounces, and while the body is mostly plastic (the Q is constucted from sturdy magnesium), the camera feels quite solid. If you don't need interchangeable lenses, you can get any number of point-and-shoots with images sensors that are physically larger than the 1/2.3-inch 12-megapixel sensor used by the Q10, including our Editors' Choice compact Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100, which has a comparatively huge 1-inch sensor and sells for only $50 more than the Q10.
The 3x 02 Standard Zoom Lens covers a 27-83mm equivalent field of view and is a little large for the camera?it's narrower in diameter than the 14-42mm (28-84mm equivalent) lens that Olympus bundles with the PEN Mini, but matches its height. This prevents you from sliding the Q10 comfortably into your pocket with the standard lens attached?a feat that the Q was able to achieve as it shipped with a fast standard-angle prime lens. That lens is currently unavailable for purchase on its own, but Pentax expects to start selling it as a standalone optic next February. Our Q10 review unit was silver and black, but there is also a red and black version available.
Aside from the change in material, the Q10 is identical in design to its predecessor. There are three control wheels?one on the front and two on the top. The front wheel is programmable?by default it can apply one of four art filters, but it can be changed to adjust the color space, apply digital filters, or change the image aspect ratio. The filters will pair with any of the inexpensive toy lenses available for the Q system?the 03 Toy Lens Fish Eye, 04 Toy Lens Wide, and 05 Toy Lens Telephoto?any of these lenses paired with the filters will give your images a Lomo toy camera look.
On top you'll find a standard Mode Dial which lets you select from the standard Program, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority, Manual, Movie, and Scene modes. There is one unique setting?Blur Control. Because the Q10 has a small sensor, it's harder to get a shallow depth of field like you can with a camera with a larger image sensor. It applies a software filter to blur parts of the image to simulate the bokeh effect that you can get with an SLR or other large-sensor camera. This feature works, but applying it to a shot takes about 6 seconds of processing time?which is simply unacceptable.
On top behind the Mode Dial is a standard control wheel, which can be used to adjust the f-stop in Aperture Priority, the shutter speed in Shutter Priority, and so on. Rear buttons are there to adjust Exposure Compensation, ISO, the Self Timer, Flash output, and White Balance. There's a built-in flash on an articulating arm. It can fire when flush with the body, but you can reduce the risk of red eye by flicking the switch that raises it above and away from the lens. There is a hot shoe to connect an external flash, but it doesn't support an EVF?an add-on feature that is fairly ubiquitous in the compact interchangeable lens sphere. You can add one to the Olympus PEN Lite E-PL5, although that camera lacks a built-in flash.
The rear display is 3 inches in size and features a 460k-dot resolution. It's reasonably sharp, but others cameras in this class have moved to sharper 920k-dot LCDs. The Sony NEX-F3 offers a wider tilting display with a sharper resolution that also tilts up or down?but that camera is bigger than the Q10 and its kit lens, which must cover an SLR-sized APS-C image sensor, is quite large.
