Microsoft and Toyota Team Up for Improved Racing Performance

We?ve already told you that Toyota and Microsoft partnered to create a Windows 8 application, but the two companies are now ready to use the software in real life.

The Trackside app is being used on a Surface Pro to collect performance data in real time and to share stats with both the crew and the driver.

This would allow engineers to fine-tune the car for enhanced performance, Microsoft said in a press statement.

?Trackside running on Surface Pro means more time is spent on the track and less time is spent talking,? said Steve Wickham, TRD?s vice president of chassis operations.

?Teams are back on the track faster, allowing them more time to determine the optimum setup for the race car. Our mission is to take advantage of the latest innovation in technology to quickly get better data ? which translates into faster cars on the track.?

More information on the Trackside app development, but also on TRD?s own view on Windows 8 can be found in our interview with the team available here.

NFL exec: Union to blame for HGH policy holdup

Updated: February 21, 2013, 6:14 PM ET

By Paul Kuharsky | ESPN.com

INDIANAPOLIS -- The NFL executive heading up the league's effort to implement HGH testing said Thursday that the policy should have been in place for a year already and that the failure of the NFL Players Association to do its part to make testing happen has created a "disservice to all."

Adolpho Birch, the NFL's senior vice president of law and labor policy, said the league offered the players a proposal before the Super Bowl that addressed each of the NFLPA's concerns. The league got a response Wednesday night that Birch said he has yet to review.

?

I have concerns for the vast majority of our players who are clean and want to compete in the right way, that they are being sacrificed for issues that don't involve the policy and are really more about trying to get do-overs on issues that are unrelated to the effectiveness of this particular steroid policy.

? -- Adolpho Birch, the NFL's senior vice president of law and labor policy

Birch said the players' primary objection to the testing has moved from an insistence on a population study to concerns with an appeals process and that the union has tried to raise issues not connected to HGH testing.

"In response to the recent set of issues raised, we put forward a proposal that addressed every one of the stated concerns that they had concerning the appeals process," Birch said at the NFL scouting combine.

That proposal, he said, includes an option for players to challenge the science of the test as the union requested, despite the league's stance that the test is sound and that such appeals would be an unhealthy element of a policy.

"There is no question that the test is accurate, the test is reliable, and it is perfectly appropriate for NFL players," he said.

NFLPA spokesman George Atallah responded to Birch's claims later Thursday, saying, "The false characterizations Adolpho made today about the NFL's HGH proposal bring us no closer to a fair, safe and effective testing protocol."

On Tuesday, the union said in a conference call that it favors HGH testing but only with a strong appeal process.

"We've had kind of a long history in our union and the league's relationship and that's deteriorated the trust between the two, and the players don't feel comfortable moving forward and I don't feel comfortable moving forward without the proper protections in place," NFLPA president Domonique Foxworth said. "As far as I understand, there's no good reason not to have those protections in place, so that's kind of the hold up as far as HGH is concerned.

"HGH testing that doesn't give our players the opportunity to appeal, that's just a nonstarter."

Birch said both sides are sending bad messages with the inability to reach agreement on a policy they said they agreed to put together as part of a new collective bargaining agreement in 2011.

"I have concerns for the vast majority of our players who are clean and want to compete in the right way, that they are being sacrificed for issues that don't involve the policy and are really more about trying to get do-overs on issues that are unrelated to the effectiveness of this particular steroid policy," he said. "I have concerns for that minority of players that are looking to game the system, that they believe, given the union's lack of urgency and lack of commitment on this thing, that they might be able to continue to get away with bending or cheating on our system. I have concerns for the fans who see this continued effort not to get this done as some sign that the NFL and the league and its players are no longer serious about eliminating the threat of performance-enhancing drugs."

In trickle-down fashion, it's sending a bad message to kids who play about what's permissible at the highest level of the sport, Birch said.

While the league is giving ground on the appeal process, it does not want to create a system where players can stall the system to delay the inevitable.

With regard to the broader policy against performance enhancers, Birch said the league would prefer a policy like that of Major League Baseball, which the NFLPA has said it likes.

But under those rules, the substance for which a player tests positive is revealed. The NFL policy forbids such a revelation. Many players who have been penalized for positive tests recently have claimed to have tested positive for Adderall, and there is a lot of skepticism about players and agents using the ADHD drug to hide behind a positive test for something the public would perceive as worse.

The NFL would like such information to be public "so that there is no misinformation and ability to sort of minimize what the nature of an individual's violation is," Birch said. "We think that's very important -- not only for accuracy but also to help other players understand the real types of substances that could potentially lead to a positive result."

Floral signs go electric: Bumblebees find and distinguish electric signals from flowers

Feb. 21, 2013 ? Flowers' methods of communicating are at least as sophisticated as any devised by an advertising agency, according to a new study, published February 21 in Science Express by researchers from the University of Bristol. However, for any advertisement to be successful, it has to reach, and be perceived by, its target audience. The research shows for the first time that pollinators such as bumblebees are able to find and distinguish electric signals given out by flowers.

Flowers often produce bright colours, patterns and enticing fragrances to attract their pollinators. Researchers at Bristol's School of Biological Sciences, led by Professor Daniel Robert, found that flowers also have their equivalent of a neon sign -- patterns of electrical signals that can communicate information to the insect pollinator. These electrical signals can work in concert with the flower's other attractive signals and enhance floral advertising power.

Plants are usually charged negatively and emit weak electric fields. On their side, bees acquire a positive charge as they fly through the air. No spark is produced as a charged bee approaches a charged flower, but a small electric force builds up that can potentially convey information.

By placing electrodes in the stems of petunias, the researchers showed that when a bee lands, the flower's potential changes and remains so for several minutes. Could this be a way by which flowers tell bees another bee has recently been visiting? To their surprise, the researchers discovered that bumblebees can detect and distinguish between different floral electric fields.

Also, the researchers found that when bees were given a learning test, they were faster at learning the difference between two colours when electric signals were also available.

How then do bees detect electric fields? This is not yet known, although the researchers speculate that hairy bumblebees bristle up under the electrostatic force, just like one's hair in front of an old television screen.

The discovery of such electric detection has opened up a whole new understanding of insect perception and flower communication.

Dr Heather Whitney, a co-author of the study said: "This novel communication channel reveals how flowers can potentially inform their pollinators about the honest status of their precious nectar and pollen reserves."

Professor Robert said: "The last thing a flower wants is to attract a bee and then fail to provide nectar: a lesson in honest advertising since bees are good learners and would soon lose interest in such an unrewarding flower.

"The co-evolution between flowers and bees has a long and beneficial history, so perhaps it's not entirely surprising that we are still discovering today how remarkably sophisticated their communication is."

The research was supported by the Leverhulme Trust.

5 big US banks have cut mortgage debt by $19 billion

WASHINGTON ? Five of the biggest U.S. banks have cut struggling homeowners' mortgage balances by $19 billion, part of a total $45.8 billion in relief provided under a landmark settlement over foreclosure abuses.

More than 550,000 borrowers received some form of mortgage relief between March 1 and Dec. 31, 2012, according to a report issued Thursday by Joseph Smith, the monitor of the settlement.

That translates to about $82,668 per homeowner, according to the report, which is based on the banks' own accounts of their progress. Smith said he must confirm the banks' data before they can get credit under the settlement.

The deal was struck a year ago by the federal government and 49 states with the five largest U.S. mortgage servicers: Bank of America Corp., JPMorgan Chase & Co., Citigroup Inc., Wells Fargo & Co. and Ally Financial Inc. Under the settlement, the five agreed to reduce balances on mortgages where the borrower owes more than the home is worth and to refinance some loans. The banks also are required to make foreclosure their last resort, and they can't foreclose on a homeowner who is being considered for a loan modification.

The settlement closed a painful chapter of the financial crisis when home values sank and millions edged toward foreclosure. Many companies had processed foreclosures without verifying documents.

The agreement reduces mortgage debt for only a fraction of those whose mortgages are underwater. About 11 million U.S. households are underwater, and the settlement is expected to help about a million of them.

Smith's report says $19.5 billion of the $45.8 billion in relief was in the form of short sales, in which lenders agree to accept less than what the seller owes on the mortgage. Lenders are increasingly favoring short sales rather than waiting for troubled loans to go through the foreclosure process.

Of the roughly $19 billion in reduced mortgage principal, according to the report, Bank of America had provided $13.5 billion; JPMorgan Chase, $1.8 billion; Citigroup, $1.9 billion; Wells Fargo, $1.4 billion; and Ally, $238 million.

Ally, the former financial arm of General Motors Co., now has fulfilled its obligation for the relief it is required to provide under the settlement, Smith said.

The banks provided another $2.2 billion in relief by refinancing 56,400 home loans with an average principal balance of $211,834. As a result, borrowers will save an average of about $417 in interest payments each month, the report says.

The banks also had $3.5 billion worth of loans under trial modifications as of Dec. 31. That could lead to permanent reduction in loan balances of $138,802 if the trials are completed.

"I believe we have made progress, particularly as it relates to (mortgage) relief, but I know from my regular conversations with advocates across the nation that the banks and I have much more work to do on behalf of borrowers," Smith said in a statement.

In separate settlements announced last month, 13 banks agreed to pay a combined $9.3 billion to settle federal complaints that they wrongfully foreclosed on homeowners who should have been allowed to stay in their homes. The settlements ended a review of loan files required under a 2011 action by federal agencies.

They could compensate borrowers whose homes were seized because of abuses such as "robo-signing," when banks automatically signed off on foreclosures without properly reviewing documents. The settlements also will help eliminate huge potential liabilities for the banks: Aurora, Bank of America, Citigroup, Goldman Sachs, HSBC, JPMorgan Chase, MetLife Bank, Morgan Stanley, PNC Financial Services, Sovereign, SunTrust, U.S. Bank and Wells Fargo.

Ubuntu Touch developer preview: What you need to know

Ubuntu tablet

You can now run Ubuntu Touch on a select few Android devices, but this is far from a finished product

We've been waiting for the first developer preview of Ubuntu Touch for a while now. After a bit of an odd start, today is the day we finally get to try it ourselves. As a long-time Linux user on the desktop (I've even installed Ubuntu 12.10 to prepare) I'm excited, and I know plenty of you folks are, as well. We're going to take a quick look at what Canonical is offering up today, talk a bit about their plans for Ubuntu, and even do a little bit of blogger speculation about it's future.

The most important thing to remember is that this is just a preview, meant for enthusiasts and aspiring developers. We're going to install it to play with (of course) but there's plenty that isn't working yet. The final version is still a ways off, so we can't really draw solid conclusions from what we're seeing today.

What we can do, is have fun trying it. Hit the break to see the how and why.

I Cannot Take Any Nfl "expert" Seriously That Mocks A Te To The Falcons

I'm fine with a stud TE...

How many on these boards would want Gronk v. Randy Starks??

How many would want Vernan Davis v. Michael Johnson??

I see a TE having more immediate impact on this team than a DE...we have 4 guys at DE, we have 3 DTs that are a solid rotation...

If TG retires, our hopes are on Chase Coffman?? Can he even stay on the field?? or HD will pick up the slack?? There is a reason he was 4th on the team in receiving yards/targets...if he was so freakin good, he would ahve shown it and him and TG would have had similar numbers...

I guarantee you if you asked Ryan today, he would want a TE more than a 3rd WR on the field...it helps keep defenses honest on the run and pass...

Eifert is the best "receiver" in this draft...That includes TE and WE...

I would be fine if we took TE...I think we will address our DT or DE issues with a veteran in FA...it will change our whole draft outlook...

Analyst: A $330 iPhone could triple Apple's market in China

FORTUNE -- Adding to the growing literature of sell-side analysts who think the answer to Apple's (AAPL) market valuation woes (down 35% since September) is a low-cost iPhone, Morgan Stanley's Katy Huberty has looked at China, the world's largest smartphone market, and done the math.

She made several points in a note to clients Tuesday that struck me as new:

  • Contrary to the consensus view -- which assumes that smartphones in China will only get cheaper -- she cites research showing that the average selling price stablized last year and has actually?started?to increase as Chinese users trade up to higher-quality smartphones.?
  • That Apple could launch a 2,000 yuan ($330) iPhone mini and be competitive with flagship?products from Lenovo, Huawei, ZTE and Coolpad.
  • That even at a lower profit margin (say, 40%) and a 1/3 cannibalization rate (i.e. customers buy one third fewer full-priced iPhones), the cheaper iPhone would increase Apple's revenue and gross profits (see her spreadsheet above).
  • That an iPhone mini and a LTE license from the Chinese government this year or next could finally persuade China Mobile (CHL), with 700 million subscribers, to cut a deal with Apple.
  • If all this comes to pass, Huberty estimates that Apple's addressable smartphone market in China, which had dwindled to 10%, could triple to nearly 30%.

This assumes, of course, that Apple can find a way to build a $330 iPhone with cheaper parts, a slower processor, a lower resolution screen and perhaps a plastic body, that isn't, in the phrase Tim Cook used at a Goldman Sachs conference last week, "a crappy product."

Obama goes local in budget battle

In this Dec. 10, 2010 file photo, President Barack Obama speaks to workers about the economy during a visit to??President Barack Obama will pound away at Republicans on Wednesday over the automatic ?sequester? spending cuts in a series of eight local interviews, the White House announced.

Obama will speak to reporters from Boston, Baltimore, San Francisco, Honolulu, Oklahoma City, Wichita, Kan., San Antonio, Texas, and Charleston, S.C.,

?By speaking to anchors from stations around the country, the President will have an opportunity to focus on the harmful local impacts that will be felt if Congressional Republicans refuse to compromise,? an Obama aide said in an email sent to reporters.

The president has been arguing that the only thing holding up a compromise that would avert the cuts?which both sides have characterized as damaging to national security and the fragile recovery?is Republican opposition to closing tax loopholes that chiefly benefit wealthy Americans or rich corporations. Republicans say Obama already got all of the tax hikes he?s going to get in the deal on the fiscal cliff, and that it's time to focus on spending cuts.

The GOP has also hit the president for proposing fresh infrastructure spending. Obama, said the aide, was to defend that approach in the interviews as ?smart investments we need to make to boost our economy even as we reduce the deficit.? Infrastructure spending?on roads, bridges, and other structures?is tailor-made for interviews with local anchors. The president could list specific projects?and may well do just that.

?The president will announce a plan to cut federal review and permitting timelines for construction projects such as highways, bridges, railways, ports, waterways, pipelines, and renewable energy,? said the Obama aide, who requested anonymity.

?In talking with local anchors, he will also have the opportunity to discuss specific, important projects in their communities that stand to benefit from these initiatives,? the aide said.

Mindy McCready becomes 5th 'Celebrity Rehab' death

HEBER SPRINGS, Ark. (AP) ? Perhaps there was one heartbreak too many for Mindy McCready.

The former country star apparently took her own life on Sunday at her home in Heber Springs, Ark. Authorities say McCready died of a suspected self-inflicted gunshot to the head and an autopsy is planned. She was 37, and left behind two young sons.

McCready had attempted suicide at least three times since 2005, as she struggled to cope amid a series of tumultuous public events that marked much of her adult life.

Speaking to The Associated Press in 2010, McCready smiled wryly while talking about the string of issues she'd dealt with over the last half-decade.

"It is a giant whirlwind of chaos all the time," she said of her life. "I call my life a beautiful mess and organized chaos. It's just always been like that. My entire life things have been attracted to me and vice versa that turn into chaotic nightmares or I create the chaos myself. I think that's really the life of a celebrity, of a big, huge, giant personality."

This time it seems the whirlwind overwhelmed McCready.

Her death comes a month after that of David Wilson, her longtime boyfriend and the father of her youngest son. He is believed to have shot himself on the same porch of the home they shared in Heber Springs, a small vacation community of large lakefront houses about 65 miles north of Little Rock. His death also was investigated as a suicide.

It was the most difficult moment in a life full of them. McCready issued a statement last month lamenting his death. And she called him her soul mate and a caregiver to her sons in an interview with NBC's "Today" show.

"I just keep telling myself that the more suffering that I go through, the greater character I'll have," she said, according to a transcript of the interview.

Like so many times before, McCready showed a little toughness in the midst of a personal storm, again endearing herself to her fans. But as usual, the brave face for the camera hid a much more complicated internal struggle that surfaced publicly time and again over the last 10 years.

This time, along with her remembrances of finding Wilson as he lay dying, she also answered questions about whether they'd argued earlier that evening about an affair and if she'd shot him.

"Oh, my God," the "Today" transcript reads. "No. Oh, my God. No. He was my life. We were each other's life."

It's unclear what circumstances led to McCready taking her own life, but it appears she was struggling again with twin issues that have persisted for years ? substance abuse and the custody of her children. She checked into court-ordered rehab and gave her children up to foster care earlier this month after her father asked a judge to intervene, saying she'd stopped taking care of herself and her sons and was abusing alcohol and prescription drugs.

It's not clear where her sons, 6-year-old Zander and infant Zayne, were Sunday.

A deputy stationed outside McCready's home Sunday night referred questions to the Cleburne County sheriff, who was unavailable. Yellow crime-scene tape cordoned off the front yard and a dark-colored pickup truck sat in the driveway.

News of McCready's death spread quickly Sunday night on Twitter, with major country stars paying their respects to the onetime Nashville darling.

"Too much tragedy to overcome. R.I.P Mindy McCready," wrote Natalie Maines of The Dixie Chicks.

And Carrie Underwood added: "I grew up listening to Mindy McCready...so sad for her family tonight. Many prayers are going out to them... ."

On Monday, neighbors who never met McCready but knew well of her very public struggles expressed grief.

Jim Jones, 58, said police had already blocked off McCready's house Sunday evening when he and his wife pulled up to their weekend home down the street. People knew McCready lived in town, but many homeowners live only part-time in Heber Springs, particularly in the warmer months for the boating, fishing and golfing.

"I never met anybody. That's the thing about up here. So many of them are summer lake houses that you don't know your neighbors."

Melinda Gayle McCready arrived in Nashville in 1994 still in her teens with tapes of her karaoke vocals and earned a recording contract with BNA Records. She had a few memorable moments professionally, scoring her first No. 1 hit almost immediately.

"Guys Do It All the Time," a self-assured dig at male chauvinism, endeared her to female fans in 1996. She also scored a hit with "Ten Thousand Angels," and her album of that title sold 2 million copies.

Beyond that, though, she's mostly remembered for a string of dramatic moments as she spent the next 15 years chasing another huge hit. Her problems included a custody battle with her mother over one of her sons, arrests, overdoses and discord in her love life.

She made headlines in April 2008 when she claimed a longtime relationship with baseball great Roger Clemens. Published reports at the time said she met the pitcher at a Florida karaoke bar when she was 15 and he was 28 and married. Clemens has denied the relationship.

On Monday, Clemens handed a written statement to reporters at the Houston Astros spring training facility in Kissimmee, Fla., where he is serving as a special instructor for the team.

"Yes, that is sad news. I had heard over time that she was trying to get peace and direction in her life. The few times that I had met her and her manager/agent they were extremely nice."

A decade earlier she was engaged to actor Dean Cain, but the two never married.

She also had a turbulent relationship with Billy McKnight, a country singer who is the father of her oldest son. McKnight was arrested in 2005 on charges of attempted murder after authorities say he beat and choked her.

During this period she also pleaded guilty to obtaining the painkiller OxyContin fraudulently at a pharmacy and got probation. She violated the probation with a drunken driving arrest in May 2005, a few days before McKnight was arrested. And in July 2007, she was arrested in her hometown of Fort Myers, Fla., on misdemeanor charges of scratching her mother, Gayle Inge, on the face during a scuffle and resisting sheriff's deputies.

Less than a year later, McCready was arrested and charged with violating her probation by falsifying her community service records relating to the 2004 drug charge. A month later, she entered an extended care facility for undisclosed treatment, and followed that with a 60-day jail sentence. Inge took custody of Zander.

There were at least three suicide attempts between July 2005 and December 2008.

She tried to get help in an unusual way, joining the cast of "Celebrity Rehab 3" with Dr. Drew Pinsky. McCready came off as a sympathetic figure during the show's run. Pinsky called her an "angel" and in an interview in 2010 said it appeared McCready was doing "rather well."

Pinsky helped treat McCready for love addiction on the show and said he'd referred her to professionals who could continue to help her afterward.

"A love addict basically is somebody that really didn't have a good model for intimacy in their childhood, often times traumatized in one way or another, thereby intimacy becomes a risk place, becomes an intolerable place," Pinsky said. "And so what they tend to do is attach themselves to idealized, bigger than life, unavailable others, specifically go after some public figure that's married or go after some rock star who is himself a sex addict and not interested in a relationship, and then idealize that person and actively pursue them to the point of obsession."

McCready suffered a seizure in one of the show's scarier moments. Tests showed she has suffered brain damage, something she attributed to her abusive relationship with McKnight.

McCready is the fifth celebrity to pass away since appearing on Pinsky's show and the third from Season 3. Alice in Chains bassist Mike Starr and "Real World" participant Joey Kovar both died of overdoses.

In the months after her stint, McCready said she found some peace, telling The Associated Press in early 2010 that she hoped to get her career restarted, write a book about her experiences and begin production on a reality show with her brothers. She'd just met Wilson and talked openly about their relationship, although the producer and musician declined to speak on the record.

With a publicist, reporters, cameras, makeup artists and musicians swirling around her during a press day for her last album, "I'm Still Here," McCready fended off questions about a sex tape and said she and Wilson started out as friends.

"And I've never had a relationship like that before where we started completely as friends," she said. "It turned into friends really caring about each other and then it turned into love and I've never had that happen before."

At the time, Pinsky thought the relationship was on the right track: "She's an easy person to like and to care about and we hope she does well," Pinsky said. "So far so good as far as I can tell."

McCready said her main goal in 2010 was to pull her family back together: "I would like my son back with me and for my brothers and I and he to be able to go and do this (TV reality show), and I think after that I will be a pretty happy girl."

The new album debuted at No. 71 and failed to gain radio airplay. McCready's plans never materialized and she soon was in legal trouble again, this time fighting for custody.

McCready took her older son from her mother, the boy's legal guardian, in late 2011. She fled to Arkansas without permission over what she called child abuse fears. Authorities eventually found McCready hiding in a home without permission and took the boy into custody.

She and Wilson had their son in April 2012.

rfmcdpei: [LINK] Two articles on the Metropolitan Community Church ...

Rachel Zoll's Associate Press article "Are gay-centered churches relevant anymore?" took an interesting look at the Metropolitan Community Church, an American-centered religious denomination that gained a worldwide presence thanks to its explicit acceptance of non-heterosexuals. What, she asks, is the Church going to do now that GLBT rights are becoming normalized?
On that Sunday in 1968 when Troy Perry borrowed a minister's robe and started a church for gays in his living room, the world was a very different place.

Perry's Metropolitan Community Churches was then a lone spiritual refuge for openly gay Christians, an idea so far from the mainstream that the founders were often chased from places where they tried to worship. Four decades later, some of the most historically important American denominations, which had routinely expelled gays and lesbians, are welcoming them instead.

MCC now has a presence in dozens of U.S. states as well as overseas, reporting a total membership of more than 240 congregations and ministries. But as acceptance of same-sex relationships grows -- gay and lesbian clergy in many Protestant traditions no longer have to hide their partners or lose their careers, and Christians can often worship openly with their same-gender spouses in the mainline Protestant churches where they were raised -- the fellowship is at a crossroads.

Is a gay-centered Christian church needed anymore?

"There are many more options than there used to be," said the Rev. Nancy Wilson, moderator, or leader, of the Metropolitan Community Churches. "But there is not a mass exodus."

[. . .]

The church today is a bit more diverse. MCC pastors say they see a growing number of straight friends and relatives of gays and lesbians among their new congregants, along with heterosexual parents who want their children raised in a gay-affirming environment. While some MCC congregations haven't changed much over the decades, Wilson said, many are emphasizing a broad social justice agenda including serving the homeless and poor.

"We don't have a rainbow flag on our website, nor do we have it on our building," said the Rev. Dan Koeshall, senior pastor at the Metropolitan Community Church of San Diego, which draws about 220 people for Sunday services.

"It wasn't a decision that caused any controversy or split. It's just been moving in that direction. We know that our target audience is the LGBT community. But we're also attracting people who are saying, ?Yes, I stand in solidarity with you and I want to be part of this."'

Meanwhile, Carys Mills' Toronto Star article "Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne thanks historic gay-positive church" takes a look at how Kathleen Wynne, Ontario's premier, took solace from the church in Toronto when she was coming out.

Premier Kathleen Wynne thanked a historic Toronto church Sunday for being a place of refuge when she was coming out in the 1990s.

?I can remember the feeling of, this is a place that?s going to give me solace and strength,? Wynne, whose premiership has made history, told the Metropolitan Community Church of Toronto, where the country?s first gay marriages were performed.

After a standing ovation, Wynne explained how when she was coming out, she would sometimes ?sneak? from North Toronto to the church near Gerrard St. E. and Logan Ave. Back when her kids were young, she and her partner, Jane Rounthwaite, would go to some evening services there, Wynne said, thanking the congregation for the ?strength? it gave them.

?There was lots of turmoil in that coming out; it was not easy to do that. Jane had known her whole life that she was a lesbian and I had not known until I was 37,? said an emotional Wynne, getting laughs when she called herself a ?slow learner.?

Jerry Buss is praised throughout NBA for his vision, humbleness

The death of Los Angeles Lakers owner Jerry Buss on Monday sparked an outpouring of support and respect for the man credited with the invention of Showtime and who figured out a way to make more money off of high-value seats. Buss, 80, died from complications of cancer.

Buss won 10 NBA championships after purchasing the team in 1979. In his first year as owner, after drafting Magic Johnson, the Lakers won the NBA title. It was a sign of things to come.

Among those helping Buss along the way was the legendary Jerry West. Buss was known for letting his basketball people run the show, which in the case of West was the way to go. West was general manager for five NBA championships in the 1980s and was instrumental in setting the table for the three consecutive titles from 2000-2002.

"This is an extremely sad day for me," West said in a statement. "As I have said many times, I have been blessed to work for Jerry Buss, the most successful owner in basketball history. His incredible commitment and desire to build a championship-caliber team that could sustain success over a long period of time has been unmatched.

"With all of his achievements, Jerry was without a doubt one of the most humble men I've ever been around. His vision was second to none; he wanted an NBA franchise that represented the very best and went to every extreme to accomplish his goals. His achievements as an owner are legendary and will never be duplicated: 10 NBA titles and 16 trips to the NBA Finals."

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was on the five championship teams in the '80s.

Abdul-Jabbar, who had a 16-foot statue unveiled of him in front of Staples Center in November, recalled what Buss stood for.

"When someone as celebrated and charismatic as Jerry Buss dies, we are reminded of two things," Abdul-Jabbar said in a statement. "First, just how much one person with vision and strength of will can accomplish. Second, how fragile each of us is, regardless of how powerful we are.

"Those two things combine to inspire us to reach for the stars but also to remain with our feet firmly on the ground among our loved ones. Dr. Buss embodied that compassionate entrepreneurial spirit."

Byron Scott won three championships with the Lakers during the '80s. Now the coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers, Scott grew up in nearby Inglewood and remembers the Showtime days from the inception.

"Dr. Buss was an innovator," Scott said in a phone interview. "He had the Laker Girls. It was just some of the things he introduced to the NBA. With Showtime, all of a sudden we had actors and actresses come to see us because of the way we played, the style we played. Dr. Buss had everything to do with all of that. It's a sad day."

And with the celebrities came courtside seats and a demand for special seating for the suddenly upscale crowd that just wanted to be seen. Buss was glad to oblige at a price.

James Worthy, who also won three titles with the Lakers in the '80s, had this to say: "Condolences to the Buss family. Dr. Buss was not only the greatest sports owner, but a true friend and just a really cool guy. Loved him dearly."

NBA Commissioner David Stern issued a statement on Buss' death.

"The NBA has lost a visionary owner whose influence on our league is incalculable and will be felt for decades to come."

Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling joined in the almost universal praise for Buss.

"Jerry Buss was a visionary and a dear friend. Our city will miss him, our league will miss him and the Sterling family will truly miss him."

Former Laker Derek Fisher was a member of the last five NBA championships won under Buss.

"Today the world lost a visionary and one of the most successful sport figures of all time," Fisher said in a statement. "But today I lost a friend and mentor. He forever changed by life. May he rest in peace and my prayers are with his family that he loved so much."

Shaquille O'Neal expressed his thoughts through Twitter: "I'm deeply saddened over da loss of the great Dr. Jerry Buss. He was a dear friend, mentor, and brilliant business mind thank u 4 8 gr ... yrs."

Lakers center Dwight Howard never really got to know Buss well, but he expressed his sentiments, also on Twitter: "I want to share my condolences with the Buss Family as well as my teammates and the Laker family. I had the privilege to meet Dr. Buss when I joined the team. He was an extraordinary man who has left an impact on the sports world. His legacy will never be forgotten. Rest in peace Dr. Buss."

Penn State Football: Guard John Urschel sings high praise for linemate Donovan Smith

STATE COLLEGE -- Stefen Wisniewski was dominant during his days in Blue and White. Standing 6-foot-3, 306 pounds heading into his senior season at Penn State, the guard/center overpowered,?out-muscled, and manhandled opposing defenders in the trenches throughout his final year in State College, earning an All-American?nod at the end of the 2010 season, after twice taking first-team All-Big Ten honors. ?

? ? ?

Current Penn State guard John Urschel was around during Wisniewski's final years. A graduate senior, he played beside Wisniewski three times in 2010 as a sophomore, including his first start, against Indiana. Those facts made Urschel's statement all the more revealing Saturday afternoon at Penn State's Lasch Building, when he claimed redshirt freshman guard Donovan Smith might have edged out Wisniewski from a physicality standpoint. Already.

"He [Smith] might be the most talented offensive lineman I've ever been around," Urschel exclaimed.

"I was?blessed?to be around Wis [Wisniewski] when I was younger, and he was an older guy. A guy that is just a technician, and is doing great in the league right now with the Raiders. But Donovan is just the best physical talent I've ever seen. Right now."

Smith came to Penn State from Owings Mills High (Md.) as a consensus four-star recruit, and a U.S. Army All-American Bowl alum. After a redshirt season in 2011, Smith debuted in 2012 as the starting left tackle, carrying upward of 40 more pounds than he was in 2011. Smith played in 10 of the Nittany Lions' 12 games - starting eight - while missing two due to a lower leg injury, and played a big role for an offensive line that allowed just 21 sacks all season. He also played most of the final portion of the season with a broken hand.?

For any player to have that quick of an impact in the trenches is always cause for pause. But its the brute way in which Smith plays that particularly stands-out to Urschel.

"First off, the guy is just a great physical?specimen. The guy is huge, long arms, tall; if you guys look at his legs, it's like tree trunks," ?Urschel described.

"But at the same time, he is an athletic kid, and the guy can move, get out of his stance, and is quick and agile. I think he's going to be a heck of a football player for us, and he has a lot of years left."

Smith wasn't the only player Urschel spoke highly of, though. A fellow classmate, and linemate, has also stepped up this winter, as he and Urschel both experience their final-everything each day as they go steamrolling toward their final season.?

"A guy that is really going to give great contributions is Ty Howle. He's really stepped into a leadership role," Urschel said.

"He's really embraced that this is his, and mine, last year. And we're trying to do everything we can to make sure this is a great year. We're just trying to make sure this offensive line is as strong as it can be coming into the fall."

"Ty and I have many conversations to each other when we hang out, just thinking that this is our last winter workout, last summer workout; it just puts a certain amount of urgency on it to make each day your best day," Urschel said.

"It makes you want to work harder then you ever have before. And both me and Ty are trying to work to take our game to another level."

To reach that level, a certain level of poise will be needed. And that's one area where Urschel might have Smith edged.

"Honestly, you go out every single day, and you try to compete, and try to be the best," Urschel explained.

"And I like to think that, on any given day, that I am the biggest, and baddest guy. That's the attitude you have to have when you go out. And when you're playing football, you have to have the confidence to know that you are a great player, and that you can play."

But never one to put himself over others, Urschel believes that mindset spreads across his offensive line, too. And with a blurry quarterback picture heading into the spring, one thing is certain: with Urschel in charge, whoever takes the first snap from center will be protected by a line well-equipped to handle the pressure.?

"We've got a lot of great players on this team, and we're just working to build our confidence, through lifting, through and running, to know that our team is prepared come fall," Urschel said.?

Zzzzzz. Driver John Wes Townley made it look easy, qualifying on the pole for the Lucas Oil 200 Saturday, the first race of the season for the Automobile Racing Club of America and driving to an easy win 200 miles later.

The Daytona ARCA race is often the most exciting event of Speedweeks, but not this year: There was one multi-car wreck on the front straight, but aside from that, the race was a comparative snoozer. Townley's Venturini Motorsports teammate, Milka Duno, qualified second and led in the early stages, but driveline problems cost her four laps. She finished 28th. It was Venturini Motorsports' first win at Daytona.

Pit stops put eight-time Daytona winner Bobby Gerhart in the lead, but late in the race, as he led a four-car pack to the front straight, he attempted to dive for the pits, and Townley tapped the rear of Gerhardt's car. Gearhardt drove through the pits at near-race speed, but he ended up stalled on the back straight.

?I still don't know what happened? to Gerhardt, Townley said after the race. ?He checked up all of a sudden, and we made a little contact and I ended up getting around him,? he said. ?No harm, no foul.? It was Venturini Motorsports' first win at Daytona. The post-race autopsy on Gerhardt's problem: A bad fuel pump, which very likely cost him a ninth victory.

Finishing second to Townley, whose Toyota was sponsored by Townley's family company, Zaxby's, was future superstar Kyle Larson, driving a Hendrick Motorsports-powered Chevrolet. Larson needed to finish the race to get approval to run the NASCAR Nationwide race next weekend, and mission accomplished. ?The race was pretty smooth for everybody,? Larson said. ?We stayed patient during the race -- I couldn't really make moves without someone pushing me. We'll take a second.?

Third was New York driver Ricky Ehrgott, followed by series veteran Frank Kimmel, probably the only driver in the top four who will be running the full season for championship points.

Seventy-eight-year-old James Hylton began his farewell season with his final appearance at Daytona, driving his Radon-sponsored Ford from 38th to 26th. Hylton, who has 601 NASCAR starts, will drive the rest of the season, then plans to put a younger driver in his car.

Forty cars started the race, one of the smallest fields in years, though 61 cars practiced at the ARCA test session in December. ARCA officials addressed that at the driver's meeting, suggesting that the cars that did come were uniformly competitive. It was ARCA's 50th race at Daytona.

ATLANTA- Lance Waller, PhD, chair of Biostatistics and Bioinformatics at Emory's Rollins School of Public Health, will present preliminary work that explores relationships between high-levels of air pollution exposure and health effects at a press briefing hosted by the American Association for the Advancement of Science on February 17, at 2 p.m. EST, in Boston.

During the briefing, Waller will summarize his joint work with the Southeastern Center for Air Pollution Epidemiology (SCAPE), funded by the Environmental Protection Agency. SCAPE tests air pollution levels in various areas of Metro Atlanta and their health effects, based on data from associated emergency room visits, in order to determine relationships to exposure. Waller's research will assess the general findings of SCAPE to identify spatial uncertainties in exposures.

"SCAPE has identified geographically-referenced air pollution levels and health outcomes," explains Waller. "Our work will analyze these data to determine whether the effects seen city-wide mirror those observed in local neighborhoods."

The team will also identify communities with higher risk levels and examine potential roles of behavioral connections such as prolonged outdoor activity and socio-economic status.

Satellite data data collected by measuring lightwill be collected to determine air pollution levels in areas where ground monitorsdata collected by filters-- are not located. Assessments made on the associations between monitored levels and satellite levels will help observe relationships over a broader region.

A second part of the research looks at pollution levels and the association specifically with respiratory diseases, as certain communities show stronger associations with these outcomes. Waller hopes that his research will lead to improved understanding of the causes of these outcomes.

"Each component of our research is essential because it generates potential solutions," says Waller. "If we can identify areas that are healthier, we may be able to identify why they are healthier and use these solutions as models to implement in other communities."

Obama on buddies' golf weekend along Florida's Atlantic coast

PALM CITY, Florida | Sat Feb 16, 2013 10:54am EST

PALM CITY, Florida (Reuters) - It's a buddies weekend of golf for President Barack Obama at a private resort along Florida's Atlantic coast.

With his wife, Michelle, and two daughters away on a ski trip, Obama was in warmer climes at the end of a week devoted to promoting the proposals he offered in his State of the Union speech on Tuesday.

Details were scant about Obama's three-day golf weekend with friends, but Golf Digest reported that Obama would be getting a lesson from Butch Harmon, a top swing coach who once helped Tiger Woods work on his game.

The resort, called the Floridian, has a golf course designed by golf great Gary Player and later redesigned by Tom Fazio. The Floridian was purchased in 2010 by Jim Crane, owner of the Houston Astros baseball team who local media reports said is hosting Obama's visit.

The president was staying at one of the resort's cottages. He is to return to Washington on Monday, which is the President's Day holiday.

Harmon told Tim Rosaforte, a Golf Channel analyst who writes for Golf Digest, that Obama had requested a lesson through an aide. The White House did not immediately confirm that Harmon was present.

"I've played golf with Ike, Nixon, Ford and President Bush 41," Harmon told Rosaforte, referring to former Presidents Dwight Eisenhower, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford and George H.W. Bush. "I never played with President (Bill) Clinton. I met him in the Oval Office. It'll be interesting. I know the president is a real keen golfer. I'm looking forward to it."
