Apple praised by Chinese media after apology over warranty policy

Following Tim Cook?s apology yesterday, the state-controlled media in China has begun to praise Apple after a constant barrage of negative stories over the past couple of weeks. Apple?s apology and policy change were inevitable, as the company was an underdog against the Chinese state media machine. At least according to Reuters:

With the apology and warranty change, Apple's mea culpa is significant not just because it comes from a tech firm that rarely apologizes, but also because Apple may be realizing that in China, it needs to be proactive.

Since Apple posted Tim Cook?s letter on their Chinese website, everyone from the Foreign Ministry to the press has enthusiastically welcomed Apple?s change in policy. Apple?s decision demonstrates the power of the Chinese media. Other companies targeted by the Chinese press have seen sales drop, something Apple would desperately want to avoid as China continues to develop into one of their most important markets. Going forward, Apple will need to move even faster to respond to both consumer and government demands, staying ahead of anything that could obstruct their growth.

Montana PSC Launches Inquiry into Availability of Broadband Internet

The Montana Public Service Commission is launching a survey to identify areas that lack high-speed internet service as the agency prepares to recommend future broadband deployment projects.

The survey is available at the PSC offices in Helena, by mail or online at http://psc.mt.gov/Survey/Broadband/. The Commission will study the survey results before meeting with telecommunications providers to recommend broadband deployment projects.

While identifying pockets of unserved customers is the focus of the effort, the Commission also has learned of numerous rural schools with limited internet service. Commissioners said extending broadband to schools and other "community anchor institutions" with little or no access to high-speed internet is a priority.

Linda Marsh, county superintendent of schools for Beaverhead County, said that with the state's shift toward computer-based standardized exams, reliable high-speed internet is an essential tool in today's classrooms.

"Every school must have arrangements for all of their students to take the test online, so it's a big deal," she said. "I have rural districts that it's going to affect."

The PSC's five Commissioners voted unanimously March 12 to direct staff to identify areas with inadequate internet service. The Commission further instructed staff to begin discussions with CenturyLink, and other carriers if necessary, about extending broadband to unserved areas as part of five-year build-out plans.

Companies such as CenturyLink that receive federal funding to deploy broadband to rural and high-cost areas must file five-year plans with both the Commission and the Federal Communications Commission, or FCC.

The Commission, which certifies the carriers as eligible to receive the federal funding, plans to provide its recommendations for broadband deployment projects as part of the five-year planning process and other forums.

CenturyLink's five-year plan is due July 1, 2014, although other carriers must file their plans by July 1, 2013. Subsequent to filing a five-year plan, carriers must submit annual reports highlighting their progress toward meeting broadband deployment goals.

While the PSC does not regulate broadband internet service in the state, the Commission has previously participated in planning for high-speed internet deployment. As part of a 2008 stipulation and settlement agreement with the Commission, CenturyLink agreed to deploy broadband internet service to 27 rural communities in Montana. The company has since deployed broadband to all but one of those communities, St. Mary. The company is seeking the needed permits to begin the St. Mary project, possibly this year.

Commissioners said they have a responsibility to provide direction for future broadband projects in the state and said the PSC survey is an opportunity for all Montanans to weigh in. The Commission asks that surveys be returned by May 1. Surveys completed online are automatically submitted to the agency.

Athletes, stars join Obama for Easter Egg Roll

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Easter Bunny, dozens of professional athletes and thousands of children will be hippity-hopping across the White House's South Lawn as President Barack Obama and his family lead the annual Easter Egg Roll.

One highlight of this year's event is the "Eggtivity Zone," in which athletes and coaches will help teach kids how to play sports. Among the stars scheduled to attend are Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson, NASCAR driver Danica Patrick, gymnast John Orozco and Washington Wizards point guard John Wall.

Two of the younger celebrities in Monday's lineup are Oscar-nominated actress Quvenzhane Wallis, star of "Beasts of the Southern Wild," and Robbie Novak, who plays "Kid President" in a series of popular YouTube videos. Elmo, Abby and other "Sesame Street" Muppets will also be performing.

The White House had warned more than 35,000 expected attendees that the 135-year tradition could have been cancelled because of budget battles with Congress this year. White House tours have been called off because of government-wide spending cuts, but the egg roll was not.

The National Park Service, which organizes the event, says it's largely funded by sales of commemorative wooden eggs, plus some private donations. The park service would not say how much the event costs.

Many mothers realize the importance of choosing to breastfeed over infant formula. Not only does breastfeeding create a special mother-baby bond that has even been recognized among the science community, but breast milk has been shown to outrank infant formula for numerous reasons. Further adding on to those reasons, a?recent study found something something extra special within breast milk ? a substance that possesses amazing anti-cancer properties.

Breast Milk Compound a Promising Future Solution for Cancer

The study, which was published in the journal?PLoS One, adds on to?what has been said since the late 1980s, that breast-fed children are more protected against cancer than forumla-fed children. The researchers in the study found that a substance found in breast milk known as ?Human Alpha-lactalbumin Made LEthal to Tumor cells? (HAMLET) can effectively kill cancer cells, providing protection against cancer for years to come.

?HAMLET is produced by combining alpha-lactalbumin in the milk and oleic acid which is found in babies? stomachs,??Assistant Professor Roger Karlsson, of the University of Gothenburg said.??So breast feeding has been linked to actually reducing the risk of cancer in babies.?HAMLET also triggers some of the cell?s apoptotic pathways ? apoptosis is programmed cell death.

What?s more, the compound could also be a cancer treatment for adults within a few years. According?to ScienceDaily, HAMLET has been shown to kill 40 different cancer types in previous?laboratory experiments. Also important to note, HAMLET kills only cancer cells, leaving healthy cells unaffected.

?A pilot study of bladder cancer patients were injected with a HAMLET solution through a catheter.?The solution killed cancer cells and the size of the tumours actually reduced within five days.?It could also work if doctors were able to inject the solution into the vein which carries blood directly to the site of the cancer.?They were actually looking for antibiotic powers in breast milk when they came across HAMLET and found in one of their tests that it killed cancer cells,? he said.

Interestingly, the researchers came across these findings by accident while looking into the benefits of breast milk. The findings are quite lucky considering how it came to be, but professor Karlsson is worried about how the discovery can progress. According to Karlsson, the treatment is limited because it has to be administered in the direct location of the cancer cells.

If scientists can figure it out, HAMLET?could be a great solution for cancer patients. Just like other natural cancer protectors like ginger, turmeric, and numerous herbs, it seems breast milk also has the power to wipe out cancer safely and effectively ? unlike chemotherapy.
